laguna mentioned that my song sounded "Dinosaur Jr-ish" last week so I decided to lean into that again. Unfortunately my girlfriend called in sick to work today so I'm unable to re-record the vocals as she's sleeping on the couch beside my computer desk so I'm left with two identical under-produced placeholder verses -- but at least I made sure to squeeze in a guitar solo this week. I wish I had more time to make the instrumental section at the end truly epic...Enjoy!

I watched this video this week (https://youtu.be/x9Ux-Anb_vk). I'm sure I missed a lot of it, but it did get me thinking about how to move different chords around the neck, and that idea led me to this chord progression.

It's a simple descending G - F - Em progression, but I put the F into a D shape to make the chords feel like they're ascending rather than descending, and added a D underneath the F chord for some spice. Maybe that just makes it a Dm7, but in the context of the rest of the chords, that didn't seem right.

The idea turned into

G - F/D - Em

G - F/D - Em - D

G - F/D - Em

Fmaj7 -  C

Played that a few times on acoustic guitar, then did a couple takes improvising on top. There are a few jazz notes, but I left them in.

I was using my GRUNDIG TK reelmachine from the 60ies this week and did selfmade tapeloops from parts of unknown reels. got two funny voices out of it and added some guitars and OP-1 pads on the fly. the sp404 helped for mixing and the beat. I had great fun with the tapemanipulations, the SP404 and effectpedals.

This weeks entry goes to somewhat medieval oblivion.

All started with experimenting some random notes with Arturia Keystep 37's arpeggiator. The beat was much more hectic 4/4 on tuesday, but by friday I figured out it needed to be a half beat type of thing, so it turned out as soundtrack-esque, cinematic type of 44bpm epic stuff.

Drum hits were sequenced in Yamaha RS7000 (besides hihat loop is triggered with TAL Sampler) - all the other sounds comes from Kawai K4. Arturia's FX plugins were in great use after recording drum and synth lines.

Hope you like this - I certainly did while building the track.

This week I wanted to try learning fm synthesis - I used it for one of the hats (the non-existent transient one in the intro), toms and bass. I tried making a track earlier in the week but it was just going sideways, so I made a completely new project today.

Context and story continuation - CHAPTER 4

After a long talk with the Mayor, the zbros venture forth into the 4onTheFloor Forest being welcomed by some strange beings that looked like flying girls, where they promised 100XP + 1 extra perk for each of the zKnights (and also one MANA refill). But nothing comes for free and after entering the WeeklyBeatMakers' Cave they realise they would have to dance to get the rewards. And soooooo they did.

After a 4h jam and construction on the KOII, the other zbro pumped it up with some pads, glitchy puffy sounds and arpeggios... after some wizardry, sharaaan! Here it is. (the last part was completely unplanned as was part of some demonstration of KOII's capabilities to a friend... - and then it grew. Oops. ;)

-- oh, and BandLab did it again. A lot of stuff out of sync after export. After 1h of blind guessing... we opted for Reaper, exporting all tracks into it, stiching, and then rendering it, now with zero problems.

What an interesting week for me. I missed last week on account of we were doing some construction in my studio. So I had a bit of a starter to go off of. I had this fun idea that required I make a dubstep track, something I had never done before and something that was harder than I originally anticipated. Realizing I was running out of time I tabled the track and tried to pivot to something else and then had to pivot off of that. Before I knew it it was Sunday and I was cramming to get something out. Found some fun vocal samples on splice and played with them and here we are.

Wasn't really sure what to do this week. Been kind of a rough week and just felt like I wanted to get some of the feelings out into a track. I was focused mainly on the sound and the vibe of the track rather than any particular sounding melody. In all honesty I was just trying to make something that sort of walked the line between interesting and unpleasant to listen to. It was rather cathartic actually. Looking forward to checking out the other submissions from everyone this week and also last week!

This week, I used these Deluge features:

made several sample-based synths (sample instead of oscillator is the Deluge's approach to melodic sampler tracks)created a kit full of samples (standard one-shot stuff) community-firmware compression at the sample, kit/synth and song levels – definitely need to spend more time with this; didn't get what I was after vs. the compressors I'm accustomed to using

Everything in the song comes from making a meal at home. The lead is the microwave beeping; the drums are mostly opening and shutting the fridge.

The piece ends with all the raw sounds used:

EDIT Monday morning: Oh, wait! Missing here is the glass – I sampled a glass, rim-rub style, directly into the Deluge, so it wasn't in the file list I consulted for the above; sorry! (I recorded the other sounds with my iPhone then transferred.) The wineglass provided the pads.

I had a great time making this, so I'm sorry if my comments here are terse. Things are just so ugly in the US right now. Add to that making sure my home's pipes don't freeze in the single-digit temps and I'm not exactly carefree.
