  • The Impact of Sugar with Lauren Gauthier

This week, Caitlin and Sue are joined by Lauren Gauthier, Functional Nutritionist and Herbalist to discuss the sweetest thing - sugar.

    In this episode we cover:

    • How  sugar effects the body
    • Why does it feel so addictive?
    • Why it is important to balance blood sugar
    • Ways to balance blood sugar
    • Ways to fight sugar cravings
    • Are there better “sugars” or do they effect the body all the same?

Lauren is an integrative wellness practitioner and advocate for truth and transparency in all realms of health. She trusts the innate healing potential within each of us so we are able to transform into the most brilliant version of self. As a practitioner, Lauren grounds her patients back into the wisdom of the earth utilizing water, sun, soil, herbs, food and microbes as her primary healing framework.

Lauren weaves knowledge from and trainings in functional medicine, holistic nutrition, health education, herbalism, muscle testing, yoga philosophy, permaculture, body work and more. She primarily works one on one with patients, in addition to teaching courses and designing nutrition curriculum.

Lauren’s journey in healing began after she was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, at the age of three. Growing up in a culture obsessed with symptom management, it was not until her teenage years that she found the world of holistic and alternative medicine. Her own journey to wellness deeply informs the way in which she works with patients today through optimizing nutrient sufficiency with food and herbs, effective and safe drainage and detoxification programs, EMF mitigation, creating coherence with water, as well as mind-body awareness and resilient stress management.

Outside of working with patients, Lauren is the founder of The Abrothacary, a bone broth company focused on supporting regenerative land management and agricultural practices. The Abrothacary’s bone broth blends incorporate the magic and medicine of our tonic and functional herbal allies. When we support the integrity of the gut, we support the greater ecology of all body systems.

Lauren lives in the forest of the Sierra Nevada Foothills and when she’s not working with patients she’s dipping in magical hot springs all over the west coast.

  • Navigating Family Dynamics with Deborah Brown

We are so thrilled to have our resident therapist joining us again this season. This time to talk about navigating family dynamics, especially as we head into the holidays and will likely be spending more time with family.

In this episode Deborah touches on all the struggles and divisiveness affecting families today including politics, covid, drugs, LGBTQ, parenting styles and technology use.

She offers up 3 choices we all have when we have disagreements on these and other topics:
Compromise, Sacrifice, and Agree to Disagree. Listen as she provides insight into how each of these can work to ease tough family situations.

One topic that Deborah dives deeper on is technology use and how it is defining our family dynamics. Technology creates a space for bad behavior and creates a space for dependence. It is disrupting the way families communicate and interact and changing family culture.

    She cites that:
66% of children have negative body image and poor self confidence
85% of american suffer from low self esteem, an all time high
And the result is mental illness rates are at an all time high as well.

Listen to the episode to hear her advice on how to reduce technology use in your family. Here is a brief summary of her recommendations:
    Unified approach between parents
Consistency - kids need it to thrive
Provide safety and security and reassurance - don't just rip it away.
Have conversations about it, away from it, set up acceptable limits and expectations
Set-up windows and amounts of time
Kids need routines, responsibilities, expectations, limits, and safety

Some more advice that Debotah leaves our listeners with in this episode:
How are we modeling behavior for our children?
How are we taking care of ourselves?
Are we creating an environment in our home that reflects what we value?
How are we planning togetherness as a family?

    About Dr. Deborah Brown
Dr. Brown is a psychotherapist and holistic health provider working in private practice.
She is a behavioral health researcher and writer, examining how we make decisions
about our health and our relationships.

“For years, I tried to change myself to fit into a world that was confusing,
inconsistent, and overwhelming. When I realized that this approach caused
me great pain and severe mental health challenges, I decided that it made
more sense to do the work to accept myself and change the world instead!
I share this experience through my work and my writing to empower others
to find their path through healthy habits, improvements in perspective, and
    healing self-exploration.”

In this episode she shared with us and our listeners some key things to know about the pelvic floor and when to know if you should seek out a pelvic floor physical therapist. This was such an eye opening conversation as we discussed what some of the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction might be whether you’ve had a baby or not and even if it’s been years and years since you had a baby. You might be surprised to know that that nagging hip or back pain may not be your hip or back but actually your pelvic floor.

Some other things we discussed with Jenn:

•In honor of October being National Physical Therapy Month she shared how she chose to specialize in Pelvic Physical Therapy and some of the things she treats with this specialty.
•How pelvic floor physical therapy can support women’s health. Why it needs to be more known about and leveraged.
•What should our listeners know about their own pelvic health and symptoms that may be connected to dysfunction
•Symptoms and issues that appear/occur years after having children that can be tied to the pelvic floor
•Birth preparation - both her own and what she teaches patients

    Some key takeaways:

•It’s never too late to get in to see a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist to find possible healing and relief.
•In many other countries every single mom goes to pelvic PT postpartum
•There is support and help out there. You may just have to ask for a referral or search for yourself.
•Get empowered. Take control and advocate for yourself.
