The University Musical Society has existed since 1879. For the last 30 years, Ken Fischer has served as its president. Fischer retires on June 30th, and, on July 1st, the tenure begins for just the 7th president of the organization. I caught up with Mathew VanBesien shortly after the public announcement:

Hundreds of thousands are expected to attend Saturday’s Women’s March in Washington D.C. The gathered are calling for equality and equity for all Americans with an end to discrimination in all its forms. When the Women’s March on Washington was announced, a pair of Ypsilanti women decided they needed to make a call for unity here at home. One black, one white, and both pregnant and worried what kind of world their children would be born to.
