LALO ALCARAZ BIO

Lalo Alcaraz is perhaps the most prolific Chicano artist in the nation, according to this bio. Lalo has been busy for over two decades chronicling the political ascendancy of Latinos in America and vigorously pushing the boundaries of Chicano art in the Post Chicano Art Era. 

He is the creator of the first nationally-syndicated, politically-themed Latino daily comic strip, “La Cucaracha,”  seen in  scores of newspapers including the Los Angeles Times (syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate, home of “Doonesbury” and “The Boondocks.”)

Lalo has produced editorial cartoons for the L.A. Weekly since 1992 and also creates editorial cartoons in English and Spanish for Universal.Building on his success as an artist and writer, Lalo’s next project is a re-boot of the famed Pocho.com, his pioneering humor, satire and cerveza webzine/blog/news site.

DR. ELIZABETH LAPENSÉE BIO

Elizabeth LaPensée, Ph.D. is an Anishinaabe, Métis, and Irish designer, writer, and researcher whose focus is Indigenous game development. Her design, writing, and art are informed by cultural values and teachings. She also expresses herself through comics, experimental animation, and other interactive media.

She believes strongly in the value of games in passing on teachings and the importance of collaborating with Indigenous community members during the development process. She is passionate about designing and contributing to Indigenous games in many forms.

In this episode of Red Man Laughing we bring you to Winnipeg where Ryan and NDP MP Romeo Saganash (Abitibi/James Bay/Nunavik/Eeyou) walk & talk through the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. 

A lot of the interview is spent on the two men talking about Saganash's private members bill, Bill C-641, an act to ensure that the laws of Canada are in harmony with the United Nations Declaration of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). 

Also throughout the episode McMahon & Saganash cover "selling out" and "working for the man", the reaction Saganash's home territory had when he announced he'd be running for the NDP, the importance of the Indigenous Vote in the upcoming federal election and what real reconciliation might look like in Canada through the eyes of the NDP.

In this episode of the Red Man Laughing Podcast we bring you a full length featured chat with Team Canada Men's volleyball player, Dallas Soonias. Dallas is Cree & Anishinaabe and was born in Saskatoon but grew up in Red Deer, AB.  

An active kid growing up, Dallas focused his efforts in highschool and set his sights on athletics. He played his college ball for Red Deer College and then went on to play for the U of Alberta Golden Bears winning three national gold medals and a silver in his 4 years. He has spent the last ten years playing on the Canadian National Mens volleyball team and is currently playing Professionally in China.

In this chat we talk about the downside to surgery, the need to take personal inventory in life, goal setting and community responsibility as a role model.

CBC Radio One is pleased to present Red Man Laughing, a special hour of indigenous comedy, music and interviews hosted by stand up comic Ryan McMahon. After 3 successful seasons of the hit podcast, the shows format was tweaked & twisted into this 1 hour National comedy special!

In January 2014, Ryan invited a group of fellow aboriginal artists to join him onstage at the Capitol Theatre in Edmonton’s historic Fort Edmonton Park. The show was recorded over 2 sold out nights (honestly, we could have sold out for a week straight there was such a demand for tickets) at the historic theatre. The show aired during the 2014 National Aboriginal Day weekend.

Guests include champion hand-drum singer Fawn Wood, singer/songwriter Nick Sherman, author and film-maker Richard Van Camp, and Canada Reads winning author, Joseph Boyden.
