An Advent devotional on Luke 1

Jay stops by to talk about the difficulty of the command to “love all” and the places where that mandate thins out practically in our lives - typically to one side to the poor and marginalized and to the other side to those who we consider “enemies.” Jay talks about some practical ways to “love your enemy” - what that means, and what it doesn’t mean, and why it’s so difficult.

Often, during the Christmas Season, we are surrounded by those we love the most. And there’s something beautiful about that. But. If love is the highest Christian ethic, and loving everyone is the way that Christ loved, then that’s a good deal more difficult. Jay Kim speaks about two ends of the spectrum of people who are challenging to love: one because it’s easy to forget about them (namely, the global poor and those in need) and the other because we don’t WANT to love them (our enemies).

An Advent devotional on Colossians 1

During Christmas, we often spend money on trinkets, gifts and trivial gifts, getting swept up in presents. But the real message of Christmas and the real gift of Christmas is not in material presents, but in presence. Jesus comes to us, as Immanuel, God with us. And as we’ll see, the gift of presence is what each of us need the most from each other - and from God.
