  • Upside Down Kingdom - Week 14
One of the most memorable moments in the Book of Luke happens in the hours right before Jesus is arrested (and then brutally tortured and killed).  For most of the account of Jesus’ life, we see Him unflappable, strong as a rock. He weathers death threats and massive storms with ease. But here, we see Jesus as we have never seen Him...undone.  And in this moment, if we pay attention, we can learn some important lessons about life with God from Jesus. And perhaps even gain some inner strength as we examine how the Son of God faced the most difficult moment of His life.

  • Upside Down Kingdom - Week 13
One of the most famous moments in the New Testament is the Last Supper. This final meal of Jesus is one of the most famously celebrated in art and literature - one of the first memes, if you will. But if we look closely, we’ll see that Jesus was doing infinitely more than simply eating with his friends. He was inhabitating 1500-year-old images, reframing a 1500-year-old history, and showing an awful lot about Himself and what God is really like.

  • Upside Down Kingdom - Week 12
There’s a dominant view that infiltrates nearly every human heart that says, “God, because He is good, probably only loves people who are good.” This makes sense. But it just so happens to be completely inaccurate. Right before His final week of life, Jesus has an interaction with a very crooked and corrupt tax collector named Zacchaeus. What we learn from this interaction are a number of staggering truths that can change the way we see God Himself, and (hopefully) even the way we choose to live our own lives.

  • Upside Down Kingdom - Week 11
It’s easy to take things for granted. Even very good, very important things. When’s the last time you thought about the good gift of oxygen? Or eyesight? Or hummus? Exactly. In fact, in our highly individualistic and highly consumeristic modern culture, we’re often encouraged hundreds of times a day to be dissatisfied with things. But the Biblical narrative - and the life and teachings of Jesus - show us that gratitude is a core practice that unlocks all sorts of deep joy. And in this story from Luke 17, we see how gratitude can change our perspective, fill us with hope and actually connect us to others, and to God Himself.
