The Sermon on the Mount concludes with a call to radical discipleship. We are not to simply be hearers of the word but doers of the word.  It means that we are called to open up our lives to Jesus and follow him authentically in our everyday.

Jesus encourages us to act as salt and light to a needy world – we are to make a difference in our everyday by reflecting the character and values of Jesus Christ both corporately and individually.

Jesus presents us with a challenging command – to be perfect (compassionate, merciful) even as our Heavenly Father is perfect, compassionate and merciful. We are not to adopt the world’s ways of playing favourites (enemies& friends) but seek to demonstrate Christ’s agape love to everyone we encounter.

The School of Christ advocates a practice of  humble service rather than a seeking of status, prestige and power over others. It is not about competition and comparison but about a lifestyle of love, humility and service for the expansion of God’s kingdom on planet earth.

Jesus teaches us that a censorious spirit is counterproductive in the pursuit of productive change.  Rather, we are invited to engage ourselves in the journey of transformation so that together we are able to discern the movement of God's Spirit.

Jesus invites us to develop a relationship of love which is anchored in faith. We are called to live out our day in trust rather than mistrust - when we do so we experience God's empowerment and enlivening presence in our everyday reality.

Jesus invites us to enter into a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father which he captures in the imperatives; Ask... Search... Knock (Matthew 7:7). We are not to settle for a long-distance relationship with God; rather we are to nurture our relationship through daily conversations that are honest and bold.

Jesus commands his disciples to do their best at living in peace with others.  His words, 'be reconciled with one another' call us to take intentional steps that foster a spirit of love and compassion within the body of Christ and beyond.

Followers of Jesus are urged to take their faith journey seriously.  Indeed Jesus says that we must deny the ‘false self’ and put on the ‘true self’ which leads to life – there is no neutral ground where we can comfortably hide.
