Our Film/Video Studio recently had a visit from Brazilian artist Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca, an Irish-born artist working in Germany. Bárbara comes from a documentary background and Benjamin’s focused on visual art and collage in his solo practice. But together, the collaborators have built a small body of video work with a growing international following.

Film/Video Studio Program Curator Jennifer Lange became familiar with the pair's work over several visits to Brazil, starting with a research trip for the Wex exhibition Cruzamentos. She not only secured their 2017 film Terremoto santo for presentation at the Wex, she arranged a residency for them to complete their latest work, RISE, which recently debuted in Cleveland as part of Front Triennial.

For this WexCast, Bárbara and Benjamin spoke with Jennifer on July 9, 2018, as their residency here was coming to a close. The discussion covers their shared history, the presence of music in their films, the young evangelicals they collaborated with for Terremoto santo, and the Toronto suburb that’s the focus of their new film for Front.

For this episode of the podcast of the Wexner Center for the Arts, curatorial assistant Marisa Espe speaks with Rebecca Morris, one of the 16 artists featured in the original exhibition "Inherent Structure." They discuss Morris's 2006 work "Manifesto for Abstractionists and friends of the non-objective," which was published in Artforum as an ad for a gallery show, as well as her response to presenting work in our distinctive, grid-mapped, Peter Eisenman-designed building, and her fascination with finding just the right color. "Inherent Structure" is on view at the Wex through August 12.

Recently, the Wex had the pleasure of visits from two filmmakers with prior connections to our Film/Video Studio program and strong creative ties to their respective hometowns: Guy Maddin of Winnipeg and Matt Porterfield of Baltimore. Nonetheless, both filmmakers have recent work connected to a city that’s not their own, and each of these projects has been seen at the Wex. For this WexCast, Film/Video Director Dave Filipi talks with Guy about his San Francisco-centric new film The Green Fog, and Associate Film/Video Curator Chris Stults interviews Matt about his Berlin-based narrative short, Take What You Can Carry.

Donny Monaco and Jacoti Sommes from Columbus' Hugs and Kisses chat with their longtime friend, Wexner Center lighting supervisor Sonia Baidya, about their unique mix of music, comedy, and performance art. The band plays the Bicentennial Stage at the Columbus Arts Fest on Saturday, June 9 as part of Wex at the Fest.

Now in its 12th year, the Wex's Pages program connects high school students with art and artists and has kids create original work from the experience, which is collected each year in a Pages book. The program's a huge hit with participants but little known beyond that. For this edition of the Wexner Center podcast, Educator Dionne Custer Edwards, Publications Editor Ryan Shafer and this year's lead designer on the project, Kelly McNicholas, share more about the program, the publication, and some of the works featured in this year's edition.

For this edition of the Wexner Center's podcast series, we share an enthralling and inspirational artist talk by the legendary multimedia artist Carrie Mae Weems. It took place at Mershon Auditorium at the Wexner Center for the Arts on April 5, 2018. Her talk was presented in partnership with Ohio State’s Humanities and Arts Discovery Theme pilot project Contemporary Art and Its Publics, and the Department of Art’s Living Culture Initiative and Visiting Artist program.

For this edition of WexCast, we’re sharing the spirited panel discussion Expanding the Field: Sports and Culture, which took place at the Wexner Center for the Arts on March 22, 2018 and focused on the intersection of sports, art, and culture. Moderated by our own Director of Film/Video, Dave Filipi, the talk included input from Ohio State Department of Human Sciences Professor Samuel Hodge and two distinguished, nationally recognized Columbus artists: Carmen Winant, installation artist and author of the new book My Birth, and Hanif Abdurraqib, author of the critically acclaimed essay collection They Can’t Kill Us Until They Kill Us. Each have athletic backgrounds and respectively, they touch on the role sports play on society and in their individual practices. Carmen’s work was recently featured at the Wexner Center as part of the summer 2017 exhibition Gray Matters, and Hanif’s book can be found at the Wexner Center Store.

As Columbus' Alternative Fashion Mob gears up for its annual Alternative Fashion Week, fashion designer and Mob cofounder Kelli Martin stopped in for a visit to discuss her latest work, the local fashion scene, and the influence of designer Todd Oldham, subject of the current Wex exhibition, All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion.
