The Statehouse Roundup: Race for Governor, District 62 Recount Update
The Statehouse Roundup is a brief, weekly segment focusing on Indiana news and politics. Tune in each Thursday during the WFHB Local News to hear a recap on news and politics on the state level.
Several candidates have put their name in the running for governor of Indiana. Current Governor Eric Holcomb has two more years before he leaves office — and once his term expires, it’s expected to be a tight race.
This week, U.S. Senator Mike Braun and Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch announced their candidacy for the Republican ticket, both with a focus on education.
“Issues like agriculture, affordable housing, and not to mention the other big issue, education. Education is 52 percent of our budget out of 17 billion a year. Post secondary is another 15 percent, and we got to do better at that. That's a lot of resources," said Senator Braun.
“So I'm running for governor because I have a vision for Indiana that will propel our state into the future, and my vision for the future focuses on growing our economy and investing in education, strengthening our families and our communities and then transforming government," said Lieutenant Governor Crouch.
Eric Doden, the former president of the Indiana Development Corporation, announced back in 2021 that he would run for the state executive office.
When Holcomb’s gubernatorial term limit runs out, the race for governor is expected to be a competitive race, drawing a large pool of candidates – particularly for the GOP.
So far, no Democrats have formally declared their candidacy.
Former State Rep. Christina Hale, Former Mayor of Fort Wayne Thomas McDermott, Jr. and former Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick have expressed interest in running for governor, but they have yet to make a formal announcement.
The election for governor of Indiana will take place in November of 2024.

The recount has wrapped up for the District 62 race between Democrat Penny Githens and Republican Dave Hall.
District 62 includes portions of Monroe, Jackson and Brown Counties. The election for state representative was narrow, with Hall receiving only 40 more votes than Githens, before the recount.
Official results won’t be announced until the Indiana Recount Commission convenes next week.

At the December 14th meeting of the Bloomington City Council, Attorney Stephen Lucas explained a Resolution 22-20 which would create a Capital Improvement Board to operate the Monroe Convention Center expansion project.
Director of Public Engagement Mary Catherine Carmichael said the office of the mayor would prefer to place the convention centers as a 501-c non-profit, rather than take the Capital Improvement Board route.
Monroe County Attorney Jeff Cockerill stated the county’s preference for a Capital Improvement Board, or C-I-B, saying that the mayor’s office switched positions after the convention center plans were placed on hold during the pandemic.
