  • Talking Traditional Puerto Rican Music with Pepe Flores
We chatted with Loisaida legend, musicologist, and resident dandy Pepe Flores about two forms of traditional Puerto Rican music: Bomba and Plena. WGRL attended the New York City Council Women’s Caucus event, the Third Annual Women’s Herstory Month celebration, recognizing women in uniform.

  • Science Sisters put Monica Mugnier Under the Microscope
This summer, the Science Sisters tried a different type of investigation. Our girls traded in their microscopes for microphones for a day and did a great interview with scientist Monica Mugnier! Along with studying environmental and biological science at the BioBase, (the Girls Club’s state-of-the-art science lab) our young scientists took a trip to our Sound Studio for an exclusive interview with scientist Monica Mugnier.
Monica Mugnier is a graduate student at The Rockefeller University. In the lab she studies the African trypanosome, a parasite that causes African Sleeping Sickness, and the ways it hides from our immune system. Her work has been published in Science magazine, and she has been invited to speak at multiple national and international conferences. Her work has also taken her across the globe, with collaborations taking root in Portugal and Africa. When she isn’t pipetting, she likes to share her science with kids around the city.  She is as passionate about education and hanging out with her dog (but usually not at the same time).
Thanks Monica, we hope to have you back soon at Girls Club!

  • On Location at the Halloween Dog Parade!

Halloween this year was very busy at the WGRL Sound Studios! Various monsters dropped by for interviews and the music production class practiced sound effects over the scary stories they created. We even had a turntablist DJ Perly, treat us to a scary routine on the ones and twos!
We also went to the dogs quite literally with an inside “scoop” of the Tomkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. Check out the mixed media piece below while we bid a fond farewell to all monsters, goblins and ghosts until this time next year!
