We discuss Stephen Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD, which has just opened at the Racine Theater Guild and runs for the next two weekends. Doug Instenes is Managing and Artistic Director of the RTG and the stage director of this production. Davidson Kane portrays Sweeney.

Ahmed White, author of "Under the Iron Heel: The Wobblies and the Capitalist War on Radical Workers." The term 'Wobblies' in the subtitle refers to members of the I.W.W. - the Industrial Workers of the World - a radical union formed in 1905 that sought to overturn capitalism in order to eliminate the brutal working conditions of millions of U.S. factory workers in early 20th century America. The union was ultimately destroyed thanks to internal division as well as a concerted attack from government officials, law enforcement, and capitalist leaders.

Earlier this week, I spoke with the new athletic director at Carthage College, Ryan Kane. Today, we listen back to a 2001 interview with Bob Bonn, who was Carthage's athletic director for 26 years, from 1992 until 2018. Bonn passed away in the summer of 2020. It was under his leadership that athletics at Carthage expanded in some truly spectacular ways. He also oversaw the construction of the TARC.

The book chronicles the complicated and difficult first season of the combined football team of Shorewood High School (a mostly white school in an affluent suburb) and Messmer High School (a mostly black school with many inner city students from low-income families.) A documentary film ("Messwood") that takes the story up to the present day is being screened Saturday evening at UW-Parkside.

Bonnie J. Ruff, author of "Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing home to our kids a new message about love, sex and equality." Ruff, her husband and children moved from the US to the Netherlands and found themselves confronted by profoundly different attitudes about sexuality - and, in particular, different ideas about the best way to educate youngsters about matters related to sex and sexuality. Ruff's book explores this.

We preview Saturday evening's performance (the one-and-only performance) of the Kenosha Verbatim Project, the latest in a series of Verbatim Theater Projects from Carthage. This one deals with the aftermath of the police shooting of Jacob Blake in the summer of 2020. Joining us is Martin McClendon, Professor of Theater, along with two Carthage students intimately involved in the project: Rayven Craft and Katherine Layendecker.
