We reconnect with composer Jim Stephenson to talk about his "Fanfare for Democracy," which was given its world premiere at President's Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20th.

Dr. Munish Batra, author of the thriller "Animal."  Dr. Batra is a plastic surgeon, and we spend the first part of the interview talking about what plastic surgery is - and some of the public's misconceptions about it.  Dr. Batra has long been concerned with animal cruelty.  In his book,  a vigilante has taken it upon himself to gain revenge on behalf of animals that have in one way or another been mistreated.

Best-selling author Laura Levitt talks about her book "The Objects that Remain," in which she explores the importance of physical objects that remain from traumas  we have suffered  ... be they traumas we have experienced individually or traumas suffered collectively (such as the Holocaust.) 

Part One:  Margot Lee Shetterly- author of "Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians who helped win the Space Race." - and Joylette Hylick, daughter of Katherine Johnson (whose story was told in Hidden Figures)- author of a children's book about her mother called "One Step Further."   Part Two:  Dr. Manning Marable, author of "The Great Wells of Democracy: The Meaning of Race in American Life."  

From 2003-  Frank DeFord, author of "An American Summer,"  a novel set in the summer of 1954 against the backdrop of the polio epidemic (a year before the announcement that Jonas Salk had overseen the development of a desperately-needed vaccine for the dreaded disease.) 

From 2016 - a conversation recorded with acclaimed composer Libby Larsen when she visited Carthage College for a week as composer-in-residence.
