Brianna opens up about her bumpy journey which included getting rejected from every PhD program she had applied to only to finally getting accepted a year later to her dream program in Columbia. Brianna also talks about being a social media influencer with her initiative "Black in Mental Health" (#BlackInMH), and her YouTube channel and blog titled "Becoming Dr. Baker". Join us for the opening episode of season 2. In this episode, Danni Reches chats with Sana Malik from Pakistan about her journey from architecture in Pakistan studies to a PhD in Malaysia. Sana talks about the struggles of being a woman in both the architecture profession and academic world in a very conservative society. She also described her experience as a mother of a young child while doing her advanced studies and the importance of a strong family support in this journey. She also address her activity as a social media influencer in the academic Twitter under the handle @PhDfriendSana and #PhDfriend. In this episode Danni chats with Dr. Hana Saliba Salman. Hana talks about her experience as an early career researcher from a minority (of Palestinian origin) in Israel, and the unique difficulties of being a minority in academia. Hana also shares her passion for English literature and especially the detective genre, on which she wrote both her Master thesis and PhD at the University of Haifa. Her current research, as a post-doc fellow at Ben-Gurion University, focuses on the interchange between memory and culture. Hana recently signed a book contract titled "Lone Wolves: Marginalized Detectives in a Postmodern Realm". In this episode Danni drank Amaretto and Hana drank Rose wine.

In this episode Danni chats with Dr. Tahira Anwar about her STEM journey that started in Italy and finished with her PhD in Helsinki, Finland. Tahira talks about being a woman of colour in STEM academia, including her experience with sexual exploitation in academia and her ongoing imposter syndrome. In this episode Danni chats with Dr. Jonathan Kolieb from RMIT University (Melbourne) about his journey from Australia to California and Washington, and back home to Melbourne. Jonathan talks about the importance of a good supervisor - researcher working relationships, as well as on his work on human rights and companies, and children in armed conflicts. In this episode Jonathan drank his newly favorite drink, Gin and Tonic, and Danni drank Amaretto.
Dr Jonathan Kolieb is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the Graduate School of Business and Law, RMIT University. Jonathan’s research and teaching interests focus on global governance issues, including current projects on international conflict resolution, business and human rights, and the accountability of transnational corporations under international law. His PhD dissertation was entitled: “Corporate Peacebuilding and the Law: Regulating the Private Sector for Conflict Transformation.”
