  • Episode 13 - Emre Turkut

    In this episode Danni chats with Emre Turkut. Emre is a PhD candidate at Ghent University in Belgium. Emre started his academic career in Turkey but had to leave to Belgium in order to enjoy academic freedom and to write about the human rights derogation and counter-terrorism measures in Turkey. Emre talks about his travels as a visitor researcher to Sweden and Germany, his passion for good food and football, and his interest in Kafka and Orwell. In this episode Danni drank Amaretto and Emre drank traditional Turkish tea.


    Emre Turkut (LL.M.) is a doctoral researcher at Ghent University, Belgium. Under the supervision of Prof. dr. Tom Ruys, his research concerns the compatibility of the Turkish derogation measures adopted in the aftermath of the 15 July 2016 attempted military coup with international human rights law, and with international law more generally, and uses the Turkish case as a springboard to critically address the fallacies of the contemporary derogation regime. He holds a bachelor degree in Law from Ankara University, Turkey. In July 2015, he obtained his LLM degree in Public International Law from the University of Kent, UK. His LLM thesis examines the remedial secession doctrine under international law in light of Kosovo and Quebec cases.

    In this episode Danni is talking with Dr. Shelley Turner from Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia, about her inspiring and challenging journey through her PhD. Shelley talks about her battle with thyroid cancer, having two children while struggling to finish her PhD dissertation. Shelley also talks about her research topic of how youth justice clients understand and experience case management, from their own perspectives to which she came from a 15 year long career as a social worker.     Shelley Turner is a Senior Lecturer and Early Career Researcher in Social Work in the School of Primary and Allied Health Care at Monash University.  Shelley currently teaches and researches in social work and criminology. Prior to commencing her academic career in 2015, she worked for more than 15 years in direct practice, clinical management and senior executive policy officer and project roles in youth justice in New South Wales and Victoria.

    Dr. Adriana Bankston is a Principal Legislative Analyst in the University of California Office of Federal Governmental Relations (UC FGR). In this role, Dr. Bankston serves as an advocate for UC with Congress, the Administration and federal agencies. Prior to this position, Dr. Bankston was a Policy & Advocacy Fellow at The Society for Neuroscience (SfN), where she provided staff support for special and on-going projects, including SfN’s annual lobby event and the society’s annual meeting.


    Dr. Bankston earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology from Emory University, and her B.S. in Biological Sciences from Clemson University.

    Dr. Ronnen Ben-Arie is a postdoctoral fellow at the Minerva Center for the Rule of Law under Extreme Conditions. In his research at the center Ronnen studies the city of Haifa at the aftermath of the 1948 war and questions - what lessons can be learned from the case of Haifa for the understating of the resilience of cities in overcoming a state of war?
