Bruce Bieber is a retiree from New York who had an illustrious career in commercial construction. However, after retiring and moving to Florida to live minutes away from his three adult children, Bruce and his family would experience a horrific heartache: the murder of Bruce’s beloved daughter, Abby, on January 29th, 2022. Since Abby’s life was stolen, Bruce has made it his mission to bring awareness to OIDV, or officer-involved domestic violence. As shared in part one, Angelique Robledo is an incredible mother and survivor living in Arizona. She was born in Southern California, but after a pivotal move nearly four hundred miles east in her middle school years, she found herself having trouble fitting in. Over the next several months she would get to know the also-18-year-old via text and social media; they would discuss their pregnancies and build what Angelique considered a friendship. But everything changed on February 16, 2011, when their burgeoning relationship became nearly lethal. Maya is a teacher, artist, and multi-crime survivor from Los Angeles. After finishing her undergraduate degree in Spanish in 1996 (at the age of 22), Maya found herself seeking direction. But it was only a couple months after her graduation that she experienced a life-changing armed robbery. Not long after that, she would travel to Argentina and forge a new life for herself far from the San Fernando Valley. However, she would be faced with even more tumult and trauma when financial, political, and socioeconomic crises in her new home increased crime rates, exposing her to the harsh reality of a nation’s unrest. It has been a great honor to host Mike Sacks and Kelly Gee on What Came Next prior to this conversation. Kelly first shared his experiences of abuse in episodes 51 and 52, entitled “Against Big Odds” and “What Happens Next,” which aired in January of 2024. Episodes 109 and 110, entitled “Silence is an Incubator” and “Up to Us to Protect,” were released over a year later and highlight Mike’s abuse experiences with the same hockey coach nearly a decade prior to Kelly's abuse. The two men, united by sharing their experiences in the media and a similar mission to change the world, created a non-profit organization called Survivors for Change. Nearly a decade into her marriage, her whole life changed with a home raid by the FBI and several other criminal justice forces. The organizations would consequently find a large catalogue of child sexual abuse material in her then-husband’s possession. However, at the start, Kim was not aware of all facets of his crimes. It would eventually take her years to learn everything, as well as to receive what closure the legal system offered. We are so grateful that Kim was willing to highlight all that continues to come next for her and her children, and that she is sharing her immense fortitude and strength with our audience today.

As shared in part one of her story, Hannah Vanderhorst is a special education teacher and administrator living in Denver, Colorado. Having moved to the city in 2016, just before going through a breakup, Hannah turned to dating apps to expand her social circle and look for potential love. However, an October 2019 date changed her trajectory forever. It was on this date that she became a victim of a serial sexual predator, although she wouldn’t find that out until over three years after her assault. Hannah would then join a taxing legal battle to receive justice, witness legal change elicited by her and others’ experiences, and work to heal from the trauma. The Broken Cycle Media team is grateful that Hannah was willing to so selflessly share her story to bring awareness to our listeners.
