What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: What’s Shaping the Rhythm of Your Life?

    📅 Release Date: August 13th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

    Episode Summary:

What gets our attention has a way of shaping what wewant and how we live. In Episode 115, we start with a questionable pressure washer purchase and end up asking a much bigger question: What is shaping the rhythm of our lives?

We talk about all the messages competing for our attention—from social media and work to fear, our past, and the opinions of others. So how do we make God’s Word the voice that shapes us most? We dig into the everyday rhythms of Scripture, prayer, biblical teaching, and Christian community, and how those rhythms help us depend on God when the pressures of life come.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · What messages have the most consistent access to your attention right now?

    · Where have you seen something, you repeatedly consumed begin to shape your desires or actions?

    · What is the current “rhythm” of your life, and what does that rhythm suggest is most important to you?

    Takeaways:

    1. What stays in front of us shapes us:

Messages influence our desires, and desires eventually influence our actions. That makes what we continually consume spiritually significant.

    2. We need more than biblical-sounding messages:

The goal is to be nourished by the truth of God’s Word, rightlyunderstood through the gospel, rather than half-truths or distorted teaching.

    3. Spiritual growth involves the whole rhythm of life:

Instead of making one particular sin the center of our attention, we can increasingly organize our lives around God through Scripture, prayer, worship, biblical teaching, and Christian community.

  • Ep 114 - Why Do We Keep Moving On From the Gospel?

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: Why Do We Keep Moving On From the Gospel?

    📅 Release Date: August 6th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

    Episode Summary:

Many Christians think of the gospel as the message that saves us but then spend the rest of their lives trying to move beyond it.

In this episode of What Did He Mean By That?, We unpack whyPaul reminded the church in Corinth to keep standing in the gospel instead of treating it as something from the past. We discuss the difference between advice and good news, why legalism is so easy to slip into, how the gospel fuels worship and holiness, and why preaching the gospel to yourself is essential for fighting condemnation and growing in Christ.

If you've ever felt like you have to "get right with God" beforeHe'll accept you, this conversation offers a refreshing reminder of what Jesus has already accomplished.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · Have you ever found yourself believing you needed to "get right with God" before coming back to Him? Why do you think that's such a common mindset?

    · How does remembering the gospel change your motivation for obedience and holiness?

    · What does it practically look like to "preach the gospel toyourself" during seasons of failure or discouragement?

    Takeaways:

    1. Holiness flows from gratitude for God's grace, not from trying to earn His acceptance.

    2. The deepest theology isn't found by moving past the gospel, but by understanding it more deeply.

    3. Preaching the gospel to yourself combats condemnation and redirects your focus back to Christ's finished work.

  • Ep 113 - Is God Getting Your Best or Your Leftovers?

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: Is God Getting Your Best or Your Leftovers?

    📅 Release Date: July 30th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

    Episode Summary:

In this episode, we dive deeper into this week's messagefrom the Devoted series, exploring what true worship looks like beyond Sunday mornings. We discuss how preferences can quietly become idols, why excellence in worship matters, and what it means to offer our lives as a "living sacrifice." The conversation challenges listeners to evaluate whether God receives the first and best of their lives or simply what's left over.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · Have your preferences ever distracted you from the purpose of worship?

    · What is the difference between attending church and belonging to a church?

    · What areas of your life are easiest to surrender to God? Which are hardest?

    · Does your calendar reflect that God is your highest priority?

    · What does it practically look like to be a contributor instead of a consumer?

    Takeaways:

    1.    Worship Is About God, Not Our Preferences:

Everyone has opinions about music, preaching styles, and church programs, but worship isn't centered on our personal tastes. The focus is always on giving God the honor He deserves.

    2.    Preferences Aren't Always Wrong:

Having preferences isn't sinful. The danger comes when preferences become the primary reason we disengage, criticize, or continually jump from church to church instead of committing to a local body of believers.

    3.    Worship Is a Living Sacrifice:

In the Old Testament, worship centered on sacrifices. Today, because of Christ's sacrifice, believers worship by offering their entire lives to God. Worship isn't confined to songs on Sunday. It's reflected in how we organize every part of our lives.

  • Ep 112 - Why Does the Church Do What It Does?

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: Why Does the Church Do What It Does?

    📅 Release Date: July 23rd, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Dannielle Simiele, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

    Episode Summary:

This week, Dannielle Simiele joins us to unpack the first message in Northside's new Devoted series. The conversation explores why the church values corporate worship, fellowship, biblical teaching, and discipleship, while also giving listeners an exciting look ahead at Deep Discipleship, Hope Encounter, and the vision for the upcoming ministry year. Along the way, we share behind-the-scenes stories from the weekend services, reflect on an incredible week of VBS, discuss why serving transforms both the church and the volunteer, and explain why healthy Christian community requires embracing people who think differently than we do.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · Why do you think corporate worship is so important in today's culture?

    · What is one area where you would like to grow deeper spiritually this year?

    · How has serving changed your relationship with God?

    Takeaways:

    1.    We worship according to God's design, not cultural trends:

The church doesn't sing, pray, preach, or celebrate communion because they're traditions or attractions. These practices exist because Scripture teaches that they are how God's people worship together.

    2.    Corporate worship matters:

Following Jesus isn't meant to be an isolated experience. Christians are called into the body of Christ where worship, fellowship, accountability, and encouragement happen together.

    3.    Spiritual growth requires intentional discipleship:

The upcoming Deep Discipleship initiative is designed to help every believer, regardless of experience, grow deeper in theology and in their relationship with Christ.

  • Ep 111 - What Does Real Restoration Look Like?

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: What Does Real Restoration Look Like?

    📅 Release Date: July 16th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Pastor Jon North.

    Episode Summary:

This week we unpack Sunday's message from the conclusion of the book of Ruth. Together We explore one of Scripture's most encouraging truths: God's restoration isn't simply replacing what we've lost. Instead, He restores us by accomplishing His greater purpose through every season of life. The conversation follows the incredible ending of Ruth, discussing Naomi's journey from bitterness to hope, the role of Boaz as a picture of Christ, and how the entire story ultimately points beyond David to Jesus. Along the way, we discuss trusting God's timing, recognizing His hand in both blessings and hardships, and finding hope even when life doesn't unfold the way we expected.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · Can you think of a season in your life where God restored you in a way you didn't expect? What did that look like?

    · Why is it often easier to recognize God's faithfulness when looking back rather than while we're walking through difficult circumstances?

    · What does Naomi's story teach us about trusting God when it feels like there's no hope for our situation?

    Takeaways:

    1. Restoration is about becoming who God is calling you to be, not reclaiming your past.

    2. God's timing is always purposeful, even when it feels delayed.

    3. God's providence is often easier to recognize looking backward than while living through difficult circumstances.

  • Ep 107 - Are You Seeing the Whole Story God Is Writing?

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: Are You Seeing the Whole Story God Is Writing?

    📅 Release Date: June 18th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Chris Heimerle, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

    Episode Summary:

Life may feel random, but Ruth 2 reminds us that God isnever absent. This week, we explore God's providence, the purpose behind suffering, and why we often struggle to trust what we cannot see. From Ruth's ordinary day in the fields to Boaz's picture of Christ the Redeemer, discover how God works behind the scenes for His glory and our good. Plus, a candid conversation about why character matters and why nobody should settle for dating a “scumbag”.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · Can you identify a time when God was working behind the scenes in your life and you only realized it later?

    · How do you typically define what is "good" in your life?

    · Why is it difficult to trust God's providence during seasons of suffering?

    Takeaways:

    1. God is always working behind the scenes:
Ruth couldn't see what God was doing when she woke up to gather grain. Boaz couldn't see what God was doing when he headed to his fields. Yet God was orchestrating redemption through their ordinary obedience:

    2. We often judge our lives from only one side of the story.
Like Ruth and Naomi, we tend to focus on our pain, disappointment, and unanswered questions. God sees the entire picture and is accomplishing purposes we often cannot understand.

    3. God's definition of "good" is bigger than ours:
We often define good as comfort, health, success, or ease. Scripture points us to a greater good: God drawing us to Himself and shaping us into the image of Christ.

What Did He Mean by That?

🎙 Episode Title: What Are You Afraid to Leave Behind?

    📅 Release Date: June 11th, 2026

🎧 Host(s): Dr. Christopher Cali, Pastor Kip Gingrich, Ashley Cali, and Robby Mckinney.

    Episode Summary:

For many people, following Jesus doesn't begin withcertainty. It begins with leaving. Leaving old habits, old identities, old relationships, and sometimes even the version of yourself you've always known. In this episode, we explore Ruth's courageous decision to walk away from everything familiar and trust God with an uncertain future. We discuss the difficult transition from an old life to a new one, why so many people struggle in that space, and how the church can become a place where no one has to walk that journey alone.

    Key Discussion Points:

    · Have you ever experienced a season where you felt caught between your old life and your new life in Christ?

    · Why do you think Ruth chose to stay while Orpah turned back?

    · How can the church better support people who are making difficult decisions to follow Christ?

    · What is something familiar or comfortable that God may be asking you to release?

    Takeaways:

    1.    Faith Requires Letting Go:

Ruth's story reminds us that following God often means leaving behind what feels familiar and comfortable. Faith isn't simply believing differently; it's trusting God enough to step into the unknown.

     2.    Transformation Is a Process:

Ruth's commitment didn't happen overnight. Her journey reminds us that spiritual growth takes time, patience, and perseverance.

     3.    The Church Has a Responsibility:

Just as Boaz welcomed and cared for Ruth, believers are called to extend grace, patience, and hospitality to those navigating major life changes because of their faith.
