No one can truly repent and believe in Jesus Christ unless the Father draws him. But when God effectually calls someone, the call is accompanied by the power of the Holy Spirit to regenerate the person, which guarantees that he or she will willingly respond to the gospel with true repentance and faith.

Biblical thinking requires that we born again, that we train ourselves in the Word of God, and that we crucify our old nature and live for God, not ourselves. And it always takes into account the Creator/creature distinction. God is able to solve problems that we can’t see how to solve. This kind of thinking leads to living powerful, holy lives for God’s glory.

We are commanded to make our calling and election sure. We do that by looking for the changed life that always results from new birth. The New Testament gives us many tests we can use to examine ourselves.

Christians should always strive to think biblically, but doing so is especially important in times of serious trouble like we are experiencing now during the coronavirus pandemic.

Christians should meditate on God’s Word to be strengthened in their faith during times of trouble. We have peace with God through Jesus Christ and are therefore able to rejoice even when going though trials. We also know that God uses trials to strengthen his people and draw others to himself.

There is a logical order to the application of redemption to individuals. The first step in this order of salvation is God’s effectual calling, by which his children are regenerated and brought into God’s kingdom.

Christians should not be anxious in the face of any difficulty in this life. God is sovereign over everything, including the Corona virus and the economy. He has promised that in all things he works for the good of those who love him. We are to glorify God and bear witness to him by how we respond to trouble.

The believer’s union with Jesus Christ is mystical; meaning both that it is a mystery that has been revealed to us in the Bible and that there is an element of mysticism to it. But this mysticism must always be in accord with the truth revealed in the Bible as our ultimate objective standard.

The Bible tells us that believers were chosen in Christ before the creation of the world and are regenerated in Christ. They live in Christ and die in Christ. John Murray called the Christian’s union with Christ “the central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation.”
