Episode 33 is another Am I The Asshole episode. But first Ed doesn't leave his house for 5 days and is going to start dating again. Susie's daughter made it onto one of the top club volleyball teams but is going to be really really really expensive... and Susie may have to sell her half century eggs.  The first write-in AITA is about wanting their son to have more Asian friends. Another story revolves around a mother telling another mother to stop packing cultural food for their child's lunches. The next situation involves a boyfriend who tells his transracial adoptee girlfriend that random Asian people are their relatives. Afterwards, a complete stranger comes up to an East Asian woman and speaks to her in Mandarin. Ep 32 starts off with Susie's daughter's team winning their first volleyball game... until a mother ruined the celebratory moment right at the end of the game with criticism towards her daughter about not being "too cocky"... reminiscent from the scene from the Barbie movie with America Ferrera's monologue about what it is to be a women... "be confident but don't be cocky". Ed had a rollercoaster of a week with the first anniversary of Dexter's passing followed up by Colt's 4th birthday the day after.  Colt got a KBBQ 4th Birthday celebration. "Your dog is a piece of your world; but you're their whole world." Ed sleeps through the new iPhone 15 drop. Susie and Ed both hate the term "butter face" and Ed talks about the creator - Butterface Lunch Lady. Susie is trying to make more positive content - esp after seeing the impact of MaryFran video and the fake "looking out for their health" excuse to be fatphobic. Susie and Ed talk about fatphobia and debate about how to unlearn fatphobic programming... as well as not projecting our learned fatphobia onto the next generation. Fatphobic people are a reinforcement of how what people say is really about them more than the person they are directing it towards. Ed talks about how he became conditioned to be fatphobic and his journey to undo that trauma - like his mother telling him he "sounds like he gained weight" over the phone.  Susie struggles with 2 daughters with 2 completely different body types and her struggle to teach her daughters how to be healthy without it becoming fatphobia. They discuss their relationships with food - the culture, the history, the memories/nostalgia, the comfort, etc. Susie and Ed discuss eating in front of a camera. Ed's grandmother's afterschool egg and cheese sandwiches. Susie's daughters core memory making holiday brie with Susie. Ed's core memory making kimbap with his grandmother. Susie's core memory of making kimchi with her mother. And how Asian parents show love through food but still need to communicate their love as well.

Ep 31 features a special guest - an extremely talented artist/muralist/activist - Lauren YS aka Squidlicker.  But first, Susie and Ed discuss Susie's oldest daughter's birthday karaoke extravaganza in Koreatown.  Ed ate a lot including getting Rice Box one last time. Ed also thinks he found the best fried chicken sandwich in all of Los Angeles.  Susie and her family inhaled all of Ed's kimchi.  Susie and Ed talk about doing a fried chicken sandwich tour of LA.  Lauren YS is a non-binary queer half-Chinese artist who advocates for and represents their communities (and marginalized communities) in their artwork. Lauren talks about their upbringing as a hapa in Denver and Hawaii and how being a 3rd generation Chinese American affected how they viewed themselves and their Asian identity.  Lauren, Susie, and Ed discuss when they first realized they were Asian and not white.  Lauren talks about grasping to their roots and heritage more recently through their artwork.  Ed remembers the first time he saw Lauren in a club (before he ever met)... walking a man on a leash.  Lauren discusses their love for Chinese mythology especially after discovering a queer Chinese god.  Lauren discusses their journey to sobriety.  Lauren reminisces on their time at Stanford pursuing a double major to pursue a dream in creating a graphic novel that they are currently sort of in the path of actualizing.  Lauren also discusses the importance of representation in their work.

Ep 30 focuses on the Transracial Adoptee experience. But first Ed's AC broke down on the hottest day of a heat wave. Susie's garage door breaks; her oldest daughter's last pre-teen birthday is coming up and she doesn't want to have a party anymore. Everyone is scared of Gen Alpha. Filipinos are so good at singing and can out-sing Celine Dion and Taylor Swift? Susie and Ed love karaoke. Our guest this week is our producer - Ron who is a Korean American tranracial adoptee. "Transracial adoptee" is defined. Ron talks about his background being adopted by white parents as a Korean baby. Ron starts to realize and feel different from his parents. Ron took a trip to South Korea and went to the adoption agency that he was processed through on the way to being adopted by his parents. Ron's parents tried to expose him to Korean culture pre-internet. Ron's first experience with Korean culture. Ron doesn't fit in with Asian or white people. "Are you going to teach him english?" Ron speaks about the racism he grew up with and his struggle with internalized racism as a result of feeling different. "You're my first Asian." The three discuss how to help with overcoming internalized racism. The divergence in fetishization of Asian women vs Asian men.

Ep 29 is another AITA (Am I The Asshole) Episode along with some listener write-ins as well.  But first... Susie hit 2M followers on TikTok and Ed gives her a jar of celebratory kimchi. And Susie feels a sense of responsibility to her followers.  Ed's mom left after visiting for the month of August for their birthdays and Ed feels hopeful about the progress he believes they made while she visiting. First up, a listener writes in about her name So Young and how she introduces herself to people. Then an emotional write-in addressed to Ed regarding a listener who relates to his mother. Then another listener asks if Asian parents want their kids to only marry Asian people. Then another listener asks if asking his friend's Asian wife for chopsticks for his Doritos deserves an apology. A 16 year old listener writes in asking if she was the asshole for scaring a group of girls from gawking at chicken feet at the supermarket. Another listener yells at her MIL during a pork rib sale at the supermarket regarding her comment about a Chinese man.  Then an Asian person makes her self-hating adopted Asian friend cry.  Then someone wants to know if they are in the wrong for calling their friend a "fat Ch*nk".

Ep 28 is about Kpop (and the Fence Lady drama tbh) - especially since Susie has never really listened to Kpop. But first Susie talks about her hectic week including spilling carrot juice and getting overwhelmed to feeling the whole day is ruined... then Ed realizes that potentially on the same day he accidentally poured jja jang myun noodles down the drain.  Susie was sick. Ed and Susie are similar but different. Susie's siter doesn't listen to the podcast so she doesn't intrude on Susie's privacy.  Ed had his mother's birthday dinner and has been cooking for his mom including making kimchi together.  Susie and Ed catch up on the Fence Lady drama in Toronto, Canada. Ep 27 of What in the Shibal delves a lot into parent-children relationships - what it is to become a parent trying to overcompensate our own childhood traumas passed onto us from our own parents onto our kids... to healing and fixing and growing with our own parents to move past from those traumas.  The conversation starts off with Susie and Ed talking about Hurricane Hilary passing through LA and the preparations they went through to the unexpected simultaneous 5.5 earthquake.  Susie also talks about starting to coach volleyball for her girls' teams and watching the team grow up as well as learning to establish boundaries with her daughters as the mom/coach and as the daughter/player.  Ed talks about his busy week of family birthdays including his mother's upcoming birthday and what to make her for her birthday meal... to a big heated discussion that led to a breakthrough moment for Ed for his relationship with his mom moving forward.  The conversation leads to making peace with ourselves and not projecting our definition of peace and trauma onto our parents... and more importantly remembering that our parents are people and the importance of seeing them as people vs "the infallible parent".  And the conversation comes full circle with the Restaurant of Mistaken Orders or the "Dementia Cafe" where a cafe in Japan only hires elderly people suffering from dementia, where the experience is more about not leaving members of our community behind, than it is about the preciseness of our food orders... valuing people over things.

Ep 25 involves discussions over the 3 main events that have/are still happening this week including the Riverboat Brawl (also dubbed "Alabama Slamma Boat Kablama"); the fires and hurricanes in Hawaii; and the controversy surrounding Lizzo.  But first Susie talks about her week traveling on a family vacation whilst being sick, and Ed talks about dropping his mom off at the airport as she goes to visit friends in North Carolina.  The Riverboat Brawl brings about a cathartic feeling of justice as a group of entitled white people who physically assaulted the co-captain of a ferry, a black man who was just trying to do his job docking the boat in Montgomery, Alabama, as the group of mainly black people who were waiting on the ferry jump in to save the co-captain from being beaten to death... and a discussion of what kind of people would focus away from the man whose life was saved to focus on making the assailants the victims. To talking about the devastation in Hawaii (please see below for resources to help our brothers and sisters in Hawaii). To a discussion about what happens when people we look up to are revealed to be problematic such as Lizzo.

Episode 24 of What in the Shibal with Soogia and Ed Choi starts off with the two of them pretending to be NPCs (non-playable characters) from social media and Ed learns the origins of that current trend in sex work.  Ed and Susie discuss Century Eggs and Ladbaby and the video where he and his wife overreact to Century Eggs.  Ed hates cooked carrots, jello, and wooden spoons on tongues while Susie talks about her spine chilling aversion to fork on teeth. Ben Bankas the racist comedian of Canada is unfortunately brought up to bring up the stark difference in the vitriol that Susie receives vs Ed from Ben's racist and misogynistic followers and is a direct example of how that accent often leads to violence especially for Asian women. All before reading a few Would I Be The Asshole from a new but not so new version of a series that includes colorism, erasure, and the "what are you game".
