What is DOT Reasonable Suspicion Training | If you have more than one driver you need to know this.

Listen Later

DOT Reasonable Suspicion Training refers to training provided to supervisors or designated personnel who oversee employees with safety-sensitive functions in the transportation industry, especially those regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). The training is aimed at helping supervisors determine when an employee may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and may pose a safety risk.

Here's what the training typically includes:

  1. Signs and Symptoms: Supervisors are trained to identify and understand the physical, behavioral, and performance indicators of probable drug or alcohol use.
  2. Documentation and Record Keeping: Proper documentation is crucial when making the determination that a reasonable suspicion drug or alcohol test is necessary. The training often includes guidance on how to effectively and legally document observations.
  3. Procedures: Supervisors are taught the proper procedures for handling situations where they suspect drug or alcohol use. This can include safely confronting the employee, ensuring the safety of others in the workplace, and facilitating the testing process.
  4. Regulatory Requirements: The DOT has specific regulations pertaining to drug and alcohol testing, including when and how reasonable suspicion testing should be conducted. Supervisors are educated on these regulations to ensure compliance.
  5. Referral Process: Should an employee test positive or admit to substance abuse, the supervisor should know the next steps. This might involve referring the employee to a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) or taking disciplinary actions in line with company policy and federal regulations.

DOT regulations, specifically those set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), require that supervisors receive this training. The goal is to ensure that employees who are under the influence do not pose a safety risk to themselves, their colleagues, or the general public.

The training often includes 60 minutes on the signs and symptoms of drug use and an additional 60 minutes on the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse, for a total of 120 minutes of training.
