Justice Justice or Righteousness Righteousness and pursue it. I think of my dog, she can really get after a squirrel. I watch her pour on the power in pursuit of that squirrel with great desire. It’s incredible to watch. That is what God wants of us. Do we pursue rightness with a vigor? Do we judge rightly? After all, they are interchangeable. Are we a people that are after Gods own heart? Proverb 15:9 tells us, The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but he loves him who pursues righteousness. Consider the zeal of Phinehas in Num 25:10-18. Verse 12 says that God extended a covenant of peace to him because he pursued righteous justice.

Today we have things a little backwards. To seek sanctuary or refuge as God mandated was to seek justice. To through yourself on the mercy of the court in the case of an accidental death that you had a role in bringing about that death. It was not for obfuscating your responsibility of the law. If a person left the refuge of that city then he would be fair game to the avenger of blood.

To elevate the name of God in a vow. I'm sure most of us, myself included in times past, have probably never thought twice about the fact that we are invoking the name of God and then sadly take His name in vain when we don't follow through. A vow can be considered unpardonable, and we don't think about that either. However, we are not our own, we have been bought with a price and because of that we do not provide our own covering, nor are we our own authority. He is, and He has veto power. Thank God.

A covenant of salome is extended to Pinchas after he follows the mandate given by God to impale those who joined themselves to Baal Peor. He does so with the zeal of the Lord, (i.e. to disdain what God disdains, in favor of righteousness) and God commends him and gives him a covenant of salome. Perhaps we need to revisit our understanding of what salome is and how it applies to our life today. Afterall, it is part of the Beatitudes and the fruits of the spirit. Jesus made a covenant of salome with us in John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
