Have you ever wondered why we have saliva? What purpose does it serve other than to be able to spit? It's actually important for our overall health!
We explored this topic on this week's episode of the Weekend Wellness Hour Show with Dr. Patti Milligan. Dr. Milligan became fascinated in this topic when pursuing her Doctorate in Neuroscience of Taste and specializing in saliva’s impact in regeneration nutrition.
Dr. Milligan explained the components of saliva, which is surprisingly more complex than just food particles and water. She discussed some of the enzymes that are important for the digestion of food and the passage of food to our taste buds.
We also spoke about the function of saliva in relation to repairing our taste buds as well as preventing dry mouth which can contribute to a choking hazard in the elderly.
Dr. Milligan also touched on the importance of saliva in immune function and human resilience. She mentioned a specific growth factor that is present in people who are more resilient.
We also touched on ways to improve saliva production through regulation of hormones and the foods we eat. Dr. Milligan even gave tips for those who travel by plane since being in the air decreases saliva production by 30-50%!
Dr. Milligan is the founder of Jet Renewal Kit, LLC and has been a functional medicine nutritionist for over 35 years. She has a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics and Consumer Sciences, Master of Science in Nutritional Biochemistry and Sports Medicine and a Doctorate in Neuroscience of Taste specializing in saliva’s impact in regeneration nutrition.
