In this episode of content marketing 101 I am discussing the difference between content marketing and content creation.

Both of these are important but I do get asked the question a lot what is the difference…

Content creation

Content creation focuses on the creation element. This is planning, editing, recording, and designing content. This is the creative side and is often the bit that people struggle a lot with. As the learning curve can be quite steep 

Content marketing

Content marketing on the other hand is the act of marketing and distributing the content that you create. This is more about understanding consumer behavior, psychology, and attention.

Where should you start? 

When it comes to which one should you start with it’s a very straightforward answer of content creation. If you don’t have any content to market then we kind of end up with nothing. So I would recommend 100% of people focus on content creation first however once you have an understanding of content creation and the ability to create content at a reasonable pace I would highly recommend shifting your focus over to content marketing. Content marketing is going to be the thing that separates you from the rest of your competition and it is the reason why nine out of 10 people are unable to create sustainable online brands because they do not focus on the content marketing element.

So in summary content creation is the act of creating and content marketing is the active distribution. Both are just as important as each other however if it’s completely new to you start focusing on creation first.
