    Love, regardless—

the second collection from Melbourne-based author poet Barbara Kamler—is an enthralling gallery of poetic portraits celebrating love that endures.

It features a unique mode of storytelling, whereby interviews with fourteen couples are poetically crafted into rhythmic, syllabic verse.

For each couple, each poem explores the intimacy of first connecting and the various complications negotiated along the way – crushing pressures of sexual or racial norms, the challenge of chronic illness or disparate histories, and demands of extended family, geographic distance or migration. Yet these are sanguine stories that transcend the trials of the everyday, making real the possibility of mutual love and joy over a lifetime.

On my recent trip to India I read it cover to cover in a few hours I kept reading my husband excerpts as so many gems about love and it’s many conundrums.

I adored it’s raw and sometimes confronting tales of love lost and found and everything in between.

The stories are truly immersive and brutally honest sometimes uncomfortable but often about loyalty courage dedication and enduring connection.

    Nigel Featherstone

“The day after I tried to kill my mother, I tossed some clothes, a pair of hiking boots, a baseball cap and a few toiletries into my backpack, and left at dawn.”

Patrick has always considered himself a good son. Willing to live his life to please his parents, his sense of duty paramount to his own desires and dreams. But as his mother’s health continues to deteriorate and his siblings remain absent, he finds the ties that bind him to his mother begin to chafe. After an argument leads to a violent act he travels to a familiar country retreat to reflect on what his life could be – and through a chance encounter with a rare animal and an intriguing stranger starts to wonder if perhaps it is not too late to let his heart run wild.

A story about family, love and the cost of freedom, My Heart is a Little Wild Thing serves as a reminder that we all deserve to pursue our dreams.

I first saw the engaging Nigel on a panel at the Byron Writers Festival he had us all in the palm of his hand enthralled by the voracity intensity and authenticity of an author who is an articulate force of nature.

  • What I've Learnt - Dr Peter Dann

    Send us Fan Mail

Australia’s State of the Environment Report was finally released recently – and its findings are a staggering picture of loss and devastation

But there are those heroes who have devoted their time to improving and protecting our wildlife.

“I’ve met people who don’t like Christmas and cats and babies,” says Peter Dann. “But I’ve never met someone who doesn’t like penguins.”

An environmental trailblaiser Dann estimates he has watched the penguins come ashore at Phillip Island more than 1000 times, and has been fascinated every single time.

Renowned zoologist Dr Peter Dann is retiring after a 42 year career at Phillip Island having devoted a lifetime to the conservation and understanding of Australia's only penguin species, the Little Penguin.

Peter was instrumental in saving Phillip Island’s last remaining penguin colony from extinction through a series of world-first initiatives and long term research. It is now the world’s largest Little Penguin colony, safe from land-based threats. In 1984 the bird population was between 12,000 – 14,000. Now, it is around 40,000, It took 25 years to complete the buyback.

Over the past four decades, Peter has excelled in the academic field, contributing enormous knowledge for not only penguins, but also broader seabird conservation, land management solutions, ecotourism, marine modelling, climate change, and developing a revolutionary method of treating oil-affected wildlife in the field.

Peter has contributed significantly to the ornithological community through representation on many committees including Birds Australia. He has published over 200 papers and book chapters and edited a book on penguin ecology and management ensuring a major legacy for ecology in Australia and the world.

I created BaiLa as a result of a drastic change in my life, coming from the other side of the world with no expectations, no safety net, no English or people who could help me find my way on this side of the planet.

BaiLa became the only way I could communicate with people and express my passion, personality and the best way to share what I love most Dance & Fitness!!

Coming to a foreign country wanting to succeed was one of the biggest challenges of my life, often people say “it’s all too hard”, but for me the harder it looks the more I want to do it.

It was an usual day in 2011 ready to teach my dance class, when I came into the Group Fitness room, and I could see an endless crowd of people waiting for me. Feeling so excited to see how many people were there, gave me the idea to use my hands to lead them,

At the time I could not speak a word of English even though my Mum was an English teacher, funny right!!...

So I said to myself, I can't say much but I can count till 10, then was when I called Salsa Number 1 and the entire room was moving in unison.

I released I was on to something, then I said

That’s why I made the decision and started calling numbers when I was dancing, so people could understand and follow my lead, then the funny noises I used to make to cue my next step chiqui, chiqui, puku, puku, turned into something more, and that was the universal language of a numbered system that could be followed by anyone anywhere in any culture., Thinking isn’t the way to do BaiLa, Dancing is...

BaiLa is the release of your own self-expression inspired by the music.

BaiLa has become people’s most wanted dance workout of every week. You will experience the way you always wanted to feel when you workout:

    •Vitality
    •Energized
    •Free and Self expressed
•Feeling a part of our community
    •Happy
    •Support
    •Sense of Family
    •Fun
    •Contributing
    •New possibilities
