Kristy Lin is a Chinese-Canadian born and raised in Vancouver with parents originally from Guangdong province in China. She is a UBC graduate in Asian studies with a minor on Asian Canadian Migration Studies, that is still in tuned with her Asian/Chinese side despite being diaspora. She is also a content creator with Youtube and TikTok being her biggest platforms (5k+ subscribers and 50k+ TikTok followers). 

In our conversation, we talked about her background, her Chinese-Canadian identity, growing up in an Asian enclave, her university experience studying Asian Studies/Asian Canadian Migration Studies, her interest in Asian cultures, her content creating journey and her goals and inspirations with her content creating path.

Therese Neri is a first generation Asian American (Filipino) nurse living in Houston, Texas. She is also an artist and weeb on the side when she's not busy keeping patients alive at the hospital. The art that she does focus on the ethnic minority groups of Asia (check out her socials to see them!). 

In our conversation, we talked about her upbringing, her experience with racism in real life and online, her experience with self hate while she was growing up, her thoughts on Asian representation (don't forget Black and Brown Asian representation!), reconnecting with her roots, feeling more love in Asia than she does in America, the inter-community racism that goes on within the Asian Diaspora and her artwork. We covered a lot of good stuff and lots of food for thought.

We talked about her upbringing being a Vietnamese-American adoptee living in a white family, the racism/microaggressions she face(s)/(ed), how she is feeling about all the Anti-Asian Hate going on, her experience talking about race/racism and Anti-Asian Hate with her family, her journey to reconnect with more of her Asian roots and how she is looking to find more people in the AAPI community to connect with.

Jerry Ma is a New York based illustrator and graphic designer. Best known for his work as Art Director and contributing artist on the ground breaking comic graphic novels Secret Identities and Shattered, Jerry has also self published/kickstarted successfully his creator owned graphic novel Legend. Currently working on a line of graphic tees with the NBA in China, he also has his own line of graphic tees here in the States.

Jerry is on this episode to talk about his super exciting Kickstarter project, The Monkey King: A Chinatown Odyssey, a 64 page full colour graphic novel that features the Monkey King story (Classic Chinese literature) in modern day New York. This graphic novel will be a reimagining of the classic Chinese literature story, think Stranger Things meet Cowboy Bebop. This project is in support of AAPI Heritage Month and #StopAsianHate campaign. What that means is that by supporting this project and helping it reach its stretch goals, you can help Jerry and his team support small local Chinatown businesses in New York. Please! Benjamin Cheung is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, teaching courses primarily on research methodology, social psychology, and cultural psychology. He came as a settler on unceded Musqueam territory from the former British colony of Hong Kong, and has been interested in acculturation and bicultural identity ever since. As an undergraduate student at UBC, he majored in Psychology (with an emphasis on cultural psychology), and Asian Language and Culture (with a specialization in Korean). He obtained his MA and Ph.D. at UBC, working on projects related to cultural adaptation. Understanding the intersection of cultural environment, cultural identity, and cultural experience has always been an interest of his. 

We are in for a treat today! We got Benjamin Cheung, super smart Ph.D on the podcast to talk about acculturation, bicultural identity, diaspora identity, and everything about being Asian in the West! He got a wealth of knowledge that will open your eyes on being diaspora or seeing things from the POV of a diaspora if you aren't diaspora. Super cool stuff! Roa of Roa's Podcast and I both got into KPOP during the second generation of KPOP (2008-2010 time period). She is still a fan of KPOP and follows it especially girl groups and BTS while I fell out of love with the genre in 2011. She is interested in the KPOP and Korean culture explosion in the West given that she is a Korean-Canadian herself. 

With the current popularity of BTS, Blackpink, Korean drama, and Korean culture as a whole in western media, we talked about how she feels about it and why she is happy and also worried at the same time in terms of this popularity. She also talked about how she does not care if any KPOP groups or musicians makes it in the West (We don't need white people to like KPOP). Last, she recommended some of her favourite KPOP groups and musicians that you can check out!
