What Lies Beneath: Procrastination

Listen Later

“What lies beneath” will provide me more answers than throwing “fixes” on what the surface is showing.

It becomes dangerous to label ourselves (or others) based on behaviors (or pattern of behaviors).

I personally can understand how that can become a self-fulfilling cycle on many levels, but this episode is focusing on just one: Procrastination

“Procrastination isn’t a unique character flaw or a mysterious curse on your ability to manage time, but a way of coping with challenging emotions and negative moods induced by certain tasks — boredom, anxiety, insecurity, frustration, resentment, self-doubt and beyond. Procrastination is an emotion regulation problem, not a time management problem,” – Dr. Tim Pychyl

We find so many little “fixes” to create more ease with what we’ve accepted as “personality quirks” or “bad habits”. What if we decided to look at what is beneath it and what drives those behaviors or patterns.

Would that self-awareness create understanding and more space for change, not just management?
