The link between social media and depression, anxiety, body image issues, and sadly, suicide is undeniable. That’s why my first guest Keisha Simpson, along with her sister Teagan created the #AsSheIs challenge. Since 2019 the campaign has spread to 60 countries and has had a potential reach exceeding well over 100 million. Today Keisha joins me to share some ways that we and our kids can push back and use social media, instead of it using us.
Anne Brodie had me in tears this week with the trailers for the new three part Beatles documentary series on Disney+ called The Beatles: Get Back. Plus she shares deets on the new TVO doc on Elwy Yost, and the unexpected and dramatic The Humans in theatres now.
At 85 years old, my next guest is a role model for us all. Dr. Sally Palmer is tireless and has been an astounding 45 year track record of volunteering in her community. and joins me to discuss the importance of getting involved in your community. A social justice advocate, an Indigenous ally, and founder of the Good Food Box program which provides fresh produce to low-income Ontarians, Dr. Palmer joins me to share what volunteering has given to her and more importantly what it can give to us.
Melissa Pateras started to share her laundry tips and tricks on tiktok, partly as a joke, but it quickly turned into a wildly popular account as people everywhere started to follow laundrytok faithfully. Melissa joins me to share her journey on TikTok which includes pulling the love of her life out of the dryer.
Finally we close out this weeks show chatting with Melanie Durrant. Fresh off her hit single “Bait & Switch”, Melanie has released the brand-new video for her single “One In A Million” and joins me to share the inspiration behind the song before we play it for you in its entirety.

  • Jessie Votary Put Her People Over Profit, And Came Out Ahead
According to Statistics Canada, Canadians enjoyed dining out prior to the pandemic, spending $2,775 or just over one-quarter of their total food spending at restaurants in 2019. Eating out had become a way of life. Flash forward to today and over half (51.2%) of food services and drinking places do not know how long they can continue to operate before considering closure or bankruptcy. Saddled with massive government debt, rising food costs, ongoing supply chain issues and a labour shortage, few would disagree that the restaurant industry has been one of the hardest hit during the pandemic. Jessie Votary of Ramshackle Industries in Stratford, Ontario knows this all too well, and yet not a single one of the employees in her four restaurants was let go despite three government mandated shut downs. A few of her employees were even able to buy homes. Is Jessie on to something? We’re finding out in this podcast as Jessie shares her people over profit philosophy with us, and her unusual relationship with her financial advisor at RBC, Tina Tamasi

Ritu Bhasin, recently found herself the target of online hatred after a pundit on Fox News featured her in one of her diatribes. President of bhasin consulting inc., an award-winning speaker, author, and expert in diversity and inclusion, Ritu joins me today to discuss her experience receiving hate for trying to teach loving principles.
In RBC’s She’s the Boss this week, I speak with Tracey Klettl from Painted Warriors, an outdoor adventure company that reconnects people to the land through wilderness education, hands-on training, Indigenous traditions, and stories. Tracey shares the origin story of Painted Warriors and how it became a popular experience for many through the pandemic.
Anne Brodie joins me with a preview of three powerful films including Benedict Cumberbatch who unleashes Phil, a psychotic rancher Montana's Wild West circa 1925 in The Power of the Dog, Michael Keaton who plays Dr. Samuel Finnix in Disney+ Dopesick about the true story behind Purdue Pharmaceuticals and their massively addictive drug oxycontin, and Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd star in Apple+TV The Shrink Next Door which takes a look at the weirdly co-dependent relationship between a psychiatrist and his patient that spanned almost 30 years until a journalist exposed the truth.
My next guest is a teacher, social justice advocate, gender bending, hat wearing, running shoe fanatic who loves to use sarcasm, wit and a little intelligence to educate the masses on her wildly popular Tiktok account Unlearn16. Joanna Johnson is dedicated to having the hard conversations without the anger and rage that stops so much of our dialogue today and joins me to discuss how she’s teaching healthy debate in the classroom, and on TikTok.
As part of What She Said’s continued partnership with New Roots Herbal we’re taking a closer look at our mobility today. Despite what you may have heard, joint pain and stiffness does not have to be a fact of life. There is so much that you can do to prevent it and even reverse it so that you can stay active and get back to doing what you love to do. Dr. Kaitlyn Richardson joins me to share tips for prevention, maintenance and recovery.

  • FemmeBNB is Creating Safe Spaces for Women Who Love to Travel
This is the first of five podcasts with RBC called She’s the Boss where we amplify the voices of female entrepreneurs across Canada so that other women can learn and grow their businesses from the wisdom shared here. In this episode we’re taking a closer look as some of hurdles those in travel may face. When it comes to travel, women are definitely driving the bus. Travel companies dedicated to women-only customers have increased by 230%, and 80% of all travel decisions are made by women. Even more surprising though is according to a study cited on condorferries.co.uk, Regardless of what is going on in the world, it has been found that 86% of women state that they are not afraid to travel. This independence though must be tempered with practicality, because women face risks that men don’t. This is where FemmeBNB enters the scene. Yaa Birago and her partner Diana Obeng know the pain points women face when travelling alone, and are on a mission to alleviate travel anxieties through curated services on their platform and to reshape the women’s travel experience and connect women through travel.

  • Duty to Report, Leadership Through Storytelling, Who Do You Drive Safely For, and Comedy Classes
I’ve done a lot of heartbreaking interviews over the last couple of years but my interview with Landy Anderson will stick with me for years. Seven-year-old Katelynn Sampson was murdered by her two caregivers in their Parkdale apartment 13 years ago and Landy started a Duty to Report Campaign calling on the provincial government to legislate two of the recommendations from Katelynn Sampson’s inquest. You will definitely want to hear this one, and then head on over to sign the petition.
Storytelling is a fundamental component of being human. Gayathri Shukla is the Founder of Campfire Kinship, a social enterprise providing story-based solutions for individuals and teams to discover their unique strengths, and build inclusive cultures. Gayathri joins me to share how leaders can lead more effectively through the power of stories.
Anne Brodie joins me just in the nick of time, as temperatures begin to plummet and our thoughts turn to cuddling up on the sofa with a good show. Anne shares details on Portraits From a Fire, the documentary The Capote Tapes, the giant ray of optimism that is Dear Future Children, and the wild and wacky The Cleaner out on BritBox.
How many times have you told someone you love to “drive safe”. As we approach the winter driving season in Canada, Kal Tire is asking #WhoDoYouDriveSafelyFor to get drivers thinking about the importance of safe, reliable tires on your car. Tiffany Moyer, our What She Said tire guru, joins me to share what you need to check to be sure your winter tires are ready.
My next interview with is here to lighten things up. Comedy Coop is an online comedy school hatched by comedy professionals, and offers classes for all levels of experience – from comedy- curious beginners who’ve never been in a comedy class, to more experienced students eager to enhance their skills. Co-founder Cristel Bartelse joins me to share details.
Finally, for women business owners, marketing their business during this pandemic has been difficult to say the least. Faced with ongoing hurdles, it can be challenging to share a message that may or may not be relevant in a week. Jordan Danger Stalker, Creative Director and Fractional CMO at Danger Co. joins me to share how she is helping businesses adapt to the new reality.
