ROGER HOROWITZ, FOOD HISTORIAN AND AUTHOR OF KOSHER USA: HOW COKE BECAME KOSHER AND OTHER TALES OF MODERN FOOD  JUST IN TIME FOR THE JEWISH NEW YEAR (Oct 3-4) Kosher USA: How Coke Became Kosher and Other Tales of Modern Food Kosher USA follows the fascinating journey of kosher food through the modern industrial food system. It recounts how iconic products such as Coca-Cola and Jell-O tried to become kosher; the contentious debates among rabbis over the incorporation of modern science into Jewish law; how Manischewitz wine became the first kosher product to win over non-Jewish consumers (principally African Americans); the techniques used by Orthodox rabbinical organizations to embed kosher requirements into food manufacturing; and the difficulties encountered by kosher meat and other kosher foods that fell outside the American culinary consensus. Kosher USA is filled with big personalities, rare archival finds, and surprising influences: the Atlanta rabbi Tobias Geffen, who made Coke kosher; the lay chemist and kosher-certification pioneer Abraham Goldstein; the kosher-meat magnate Harry Kassel; and the animal-rights advocate Temple Grandin, a strong supporter of shechita, or Jewish slaughtering practice. By exploring the complex encounter between ancient religious principles and modern industrial methods, Kosher USAadds a significant chapter to the story of Judaism's interaction with non-Jewish cultures and the history of modern Jewish American life as well as American foodways. ABOUT ROGER: Roger Horowitz is an historian of American business, technology, and labor and an expert on the nation’s food. He has written widely about the consumption and production of meat in America, and admits to being quite fond of eating all varieties of meat himself. Most recently his research has turned to kosher food, incited by powerful personal connections and intellectual curiosity. His day job is Director of the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library, a long title which more simply means he creates programs to encourage use of Hagley’s world-class research collections. He also serves as secretary-treasurer of the Business History Conference, the leading academic organizations for business historians. When offered the opportunity, he teaches classes at the University of Delaware, most recently on the history of capitalism. Through these responsibilities he has had the enormous fun of engaging with, and learning from, thousands of interesting scholars and students from all over the world. Born and raised in New York City, and having spent plenty of time in Chicago and other Midwestern cities, he now lives on 19 acres of beautiful land (albeit with a long steep driveway) in southern Pennsylvania with two children, his wife, several dogs and cats, near a third child who is in college, and with horses and deer for neighbors. When he can get away to the family vacation house in Shelter Island, New York, he is in his kayak as much as possible. WWW.ROGERHOROWITZ.COM DANIEL SIEBERG, GOOGLE SEARCH TRENDS EXPERT – TRENDS AFTER FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE  WHICH ISSUES AND TOPICS ARE TRENDING AS THE CANDIDATES STEP INTO THE SPOTLIGHT? LAURA TORRES - NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES LATINO HISTORY AND CULTURE NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES LATINO HISTORY AND CULTURE National Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15th Our national parks reflect our country’s diverse people and shared history which continues to be written. Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th provides an opportunity to celebrate Latino history and culture and to recognize the many contributions of Latinos across our country and within our National Park System.  In 2012, during Hispanic Heritage Month, President Obama designated the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene, California which was the first national park site to honor a contemporary Latino. Additional places within our National Park System related to Latino history and culture include: the Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego, CA, the Coronado National Memorial in Hereford, AZ, the Dry Tortugas National Park in Key West, Florida, the Presidio in Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, CA, the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in San Antonio, Texas and San Juan National Historic Site in Puerto Rico. By honoring the people and stories that are shared in these national park sites, the National Parks Conservation Association is calling for continued actions to increase diversity in our 413 national park sites. The NPCA calls upon our members of Congress to pass legislation to also designate the Cesar Chavez National Historical Park in California and Arizona to preserve the complete story of César Chávez and the farmworkers movement. The national historical park would include the current Cesar E. Chavez National Monument as well as 40 Acres and the Filipino Hall in Delano, California, The Santa Rita Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and McDonnell Hall in San Jose, California. On Thursday, September 15th, NPCA’s Laura Torres will be available to talk more about NPCA’s commitment to diversity and preservation of Latino history and Culture in our National Parks.   Laura will also discuss how legislation would allow America’s greatest storytellers, the National Park Service, to care for these sites as well as share stories of the region’s history and rich culture. WWW.NPCA.ORG HEATHER MURAN - SLO WINE COUNTRY ASSOCIATION - HARVEST ON THE COAST (NOV. 4-6) The wineries of SLO Wine Country boast an average distance of just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in prevailing marine conditions that are among the most pronounced of any wine region in California. SLO Wine Country includes two small adjoining American Viticultural Areas—the Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley—and other nearby winegrowing areas.  Each of these areas shares a unifying proximity to the ocean, as well as to each other. Collectively, these growing conditions forge a unifying wine quality that is native to SLO Wine Country: Cool The reliable cooling effect of the nearby Pacific Ocean ensures a long growing season, enabling the grapes to achieve physiological ripeness and natural balance. Cool-climate varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir excel in the heart of SLO Wine Country, and even the warmest areas benefit from considerable marine influence. Consistent The ocean proximity also exerts a moderating effect on the climate, minimizing temperature swings so that growing conditions are rarely hot or cold. The result is an extraordinarily steady growing season that fosters balanced ripening and consistent quality from vintage to vintage. Complex The imprint of the ocean is also evident in SLO Wine Country's uncommonly complex soils, which are frequently riddled with ancient sea fossils. Soil variation enables the winegrower to mix and match varietals to specific soil profiles, or to add more "colors" to the palette of a single varietal, heightening overall quality and complexity. The two collaborated after adventurous individual careers in the wine business, and at last, decided to work together on a project of their own. Clay, a 7th generation grape grower, and his family found themselves the owners of a significant slice of the Rockpile Appellation, through an amazing set of historical land transactions. The Mauritson family realized the potential and parented the creation of the ROCKPILE AVA. In 1998, Ian and Clay climbed the hill and watched the Madrone Spring Vineyard get planted, while discussing the future of Rockpile and the dream it represented. In 2008, Clay saw the fruits of his family's labor taking shape and came to Ian with a unique opportunity to source some of the Rockpile fruit. He told Ian in the difficult days of 2008, “now is the time to get in and build the business and have it take shape as the market improves, and to not wait until business is strong as you will have a hard time getting access to the right quality assets.” Ian took heed of Clay’s wise comment and said "When your best friend is Clay Mauritson and he offers Rockpile fruit and to assist with winemaking…... you make Zinfandel.” In Los Angeles, Ian operates a specialty wine marketing organization known as wineLA and has pioneered wine education for the past 20 years (since 1995) through www.learnaboutwine.com and www.wineLA.com.  Beekeeper Cellars is also involved in Ian’s Masters of Wine Thesis project and provides him the winemaking training he requires to help pass the difficult Masters of Wine exam...an ongoing pursuit. • 9/19 DR. KEN REDCROSS, SAFER OPTIONS FOR PAIN RELIEF, DR. RICHARD FORD, THREATS OF RABIES & HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PETS
DR. KEN REDCROSS - PRICE OF PAIN AND SAFER OPTIONS FOR RELIEF - NATURAL OPTIONS FOR RELIEF AND MAKING  LIFESTYLE CHANGES LIKE WHAT FOODS TO AVOID THAT CAN WORSEN PAIN SEEKING RELIEF IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES  What You Need To Know About Pain Relief Options Before Asking Your Doctor For A Prescription    PAIN: It’s a massive problem that affects 125 million Americans who are spending close to $300 billion on pills, pot, procedures and natural remedies to find relief. These numbers are fueling a national conversation about pain relief and how it should be addressed. Are doctors responsible for the painkiller epidemic or is it the patient’s fault? Redcross says that pain medication can be an ineffective treatment and frequent use of over-the-counter painkillers can be a slippery slope to addiction. She says pain is your body’s way of alerting you to an underlying problem that needs to be resolved, not masked. Redcross also says there are diet and lifestyle changes as well as natural remedies that can help pain sufferers get relief from some of the three most common pain complaints, and reduce reliance on heavy sedative medication that have potential side effects: 1) Muscle Pain: Tension, stress, overuse and minor injuries are the most common causes of muscle pain. Muscle pain is usually localized, affecting just a few muscles or a small part of your body with some of the most common complaint areas being the neck, back and shoulders. Causes of muscle pain include injuries, poor posture, sitting or standing for too long without movement and repetitive movements or overuse of certain muscles. In addition to pain, many sufferers feel fatigue and have trouble sleeping. A JAMA study reported the diseases with the largest number of years lived with disability in 2010 were low back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders including neck pain. Changes that help relieve muscle pain: Diet Fixes: Eat more foods that can help ease muscle pain like Indian foods that have superpower spice turmeric. If magnesium is low in the body, it can cause muscle aches and pains so be sure to eat plenty of pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, black beans, cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds, cocoa powder, Swiss chard and spinach.  Relief Remedies: A homeopathic medicine derived from Arnica montana (aka mountain daisy) can be taken orally or used topically as a gel or cream for relief of muscle pain and stiffness.  The ingredient found in Arnicare can also relieve swelling and discoloration from bruising.  Unlike menthol rubs, the cream and gel is odorless. Lifestyle Changes: Warm baths or showers can help relax muscles. Add Epsom salts to a hot bath for an added benefit.    2) Joint Pain: Damage to the joints from disease or injury can cause pain in the form of  osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, gout, strains, sprains and other injuries. Joint pain can affect any part of your body but knee pain is the most common complaint. In one national study, one-third of all adults reported having joint pain within the past 30 days. Age and injuries increase your risk.  Changes that help relieve joint pain: Diet Fixes: Limit foods that trigger joint pain to reduce inflammation including processed, fried and frozen foods; dairy products; sodas, sugars and refined carbohydrates; and salty foods. Relief Remedies: Since natural glucosamine levels drop as you age, supplementing with it helps keep the cartilage in joints healthy. Check your vitamin D levels to see if you need to supplement with more D. Research shows that people with low levels of vitamin D may have more joint pain. Lifestyle Changes: Weight loss is highly effective because every pound you lose equals 4 pounds less pressure on your knees. Some sufferers even see their symptoms disappear if they lose 10-20 pounds. Low-impact exercise also helps reduce pain and can contribute to weight loss.  3) Head Pain: Pain to the head can come in
