Why do we have Leap Year

• It takes the Earth about 365.242189 days — or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 seconds — to circle once around the sun, says Time and Date. However, the Gregorian calendar we rely on has only 365 days, so if we didn’t add an extra day to our shortest month about every four years, we would lose almost six hours every year. After a century, our calendar would be off by about 24 days.
• According to tradition, it’s OK for a woman to propose to a man on Feb. 29. The custom has been attributed to various historical figures including St. Bridget, who is said to have complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitor to pop the question. The obliging Patrick supposedly gave women one day to propose, says the BBC.

The Vesuvius Challenge was created to inspire young people to use AI technology to decode burnt scrolls found in a Pompeii library.

The winner’s skills were able to create a deep learning program that took a rolled-up scroll of papyrus that was turned to charcoal in the Vesuvius eruption 2,000 years ago, and decode 4 passages of 140 characters each, with at least 85% of characters legible.

The Tipping Culture

Seems like tips are expected everywhere. If you use a delivery service there is a delivery fee and you can add a tip but it feels like the driver wants a tip on top of that – maybe that’s just my guilty conscience.

We took a ride service to O’Hare when we went to Jamaica and the fee included a driver gratuity but the driver definitely expected a tip. When we were at the All-Inclusive resort we pay for nothing and some say you need not tip it is included. Others say tip at the end, other tip for everything. Not tht we are seasoned pros, we tip when someone goes beyond the call of duty and we tip maid services and the people who provided daily services at the end.

I like to think I am a good tipper. Are you a good tipper? Do you adjust when service is poor or extraordinary?

Admittedly, it’s tough to know how much to tip for things and for which things I should tip for.

Random Acts of Artistry

A digital artist who usually charges hundreds of dollars for the service is surprising strangers by redesigning their lackluster flyers for free, after finding them on the street.

Max Kolomatsky came up with the guerrilla marketing idea last year after noticing the many uninspiring posters plastered on street lights, buildings, and subway stations in his New York City neighborhood.

The 25-year-old started taking them home and redesigning them in his spare time, while making videos of the ‘random acts of kindness’ for his TikTok page.

Anxiety, how to Deal and Help Your Dog Deal With It

We have a dog named Bella, who has some issues. She was born into a bad situation where a breeder was not able to care for the litter, so conditions weren’t great. On top of that, she was born with a condition where her bladder was not connected, and instead of having the urge to go to the bathroom, urine would simply leak out of her. Just before we got her she underwent a successful procedure to attach her bladder. Because she did not understand her urge to pee, she was not housebroken when we got her.

Given her rough start, she has some anxiety. She will wake up from a dead sleep and get very anxious. Sometimes, she gets so wound up when she wakes she whimpers and nervously wags her tail. She also demands attention and gets a little freaked out when she stops getting the attention. It’s kind of adorable but not always convenient.

So, I asked Carol Sumbry what we could do to help calm her down and make her feel more secure when she gets anxious.

According to a recent study a whopping 82% of Americans are currently hopeful about their own futures. An even larger portion, 85 percent, are hopeful about the future of their family.

  • “There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now but I’m okay,” wrote Schumer, who said all women “should read about endometriosis.”
  • Though Schumer was candid about suffering with health issues that affect how she looks, she said she believed that a woman “doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation.”

DOG GONE IT!

At the international port in Houston, Ryan McMahon, a petty officer 2nd class, was conducting a routine inspection of the more than 10,000 containers that fill the port at any time, when he and his colleagues detected the sound of scratching coming from one of them.

The container was about 25 feet up the stacks, and they had to use a crane to bring it down. Inside were a couple of junked cars and a small happy dog.
