  • 13 - Coach Wooden Principle #5 - Make Friendship a Fine Art

John Wooden emphasized the importance of friendship by considering it a refined art in his Seven-Point Creed. Consequently, it is unsurprising that Coach Wooden incorporated friendship as a fundamental component within the foundation of his Pyramid of Success. He defined friendship as a product of mutual esteem, respect, and dedication, likening it to a marriage that should never be assumed but rather nurtured through collaborative endeavors.

  • 12 - Coach Wooden Principle #4 - Drink Deeply From Good Books, Especially the Bible Pt. 2

In this episode, Denise and Sam discuss Principle #4 - Drink Deeply From Good Books, Especially the Bible. Bill Bennet states, “Life is about continuous learning. If you’re not learning, you’re not living. If you’re wasting your learning opportunities, you’re wasting your life. Reading is one of the most learning-intensive activities you’ll ever do. It doesn’t matter if you’re reading poetry or a great novel or a Shakespeare play or a book of history or biography-it’s going to be a learning experience. It’s going to enrich you and make you wiser.”

Here are some tips that will help you become a more effective reader

    • Schedule a daily reading time, preferably an hour a day or more
    • Be a discriminating reader
    • Keep books handy wherever you are
    • Don’t just read books; Interact with them
    • Furnish your home with good books
    • Set aside a portion of your vacation time for a reading sabbatical
    • Share your reading experiences with other enthusiastic readers
    • Use what you learn
    • Widen your reading horizons
    • Encourage reading in others, especially the young

  • 10 - Coach Wooden Principle #3 - Make Each Day Your Masterpiece Pt. 3

On this episode of What's on Your Bookshelf Denise and Sam discuss Coach Wooden's Principle #3 - Make Each Day Your Masterpiece. Coach John Wooden's motto, "Make each day your masterpiece," emphasizes the importance of focusing on what you are doing right now to the best of your ability. It means recognizing that nothing can be done about what happened yesterday, and that you can only affect what will happen tomorrow by what you do today. Wooden's Seven Point Creed and Pyramid of Success are two key sources of his life and coaching philosophies. He believed in being true to oneself and making the most of each and every day. When speaking with his players, Wooden reminded them that the most they can give on any given day is 100%.
