Trending today: a survey that finds Americans are personally content but think society in general is in decline. We like the schools our kids attend, but think public schools in general are bad; we like our local news outlets, but think “the media” in general is untrustworthy; and we feel safe in our own communities, but think crime in general is on the rise. (This is also true of Congress: Americans strongly disapprove of Congress in general, but generally like their own representatives – which is why they keep getting reelected, even though Americans claim to hate what Congress is doing.) Aaron adds another facet of the same issue: Americans always tend to think the violent crime rate is on the rise, even when it’s not. (In fact the violent crime rate today is barely half of what it was in 1990!) With all that in mind, Victor suggests we pick a city to identify as “the bad place” where all this negative stuff is allegedly happening – now it’s just a question of which place we pick. (Suggestions are welcome.)
