Filling in for Victor, 97.9 The Hill’s Henry Taylor chats with Aaron about “The White Lotus” – and specifically Parker Posey’s over-the-top North Carolina accent. Fans have been debating how accurate it is, but it’s unquestionably a highlight of the show – and both Henry and Aaron agree it’s more accurate than not. (No spoilers, we promise!)
Read Henry’s take on season 3 of “The White Lotus,” with special attention to Victoria and the Ratliff family.

Trending today: a legal case in Europe, where Birkenstock is trying to fend off copycats by getting a court to declare its sandals as a form of “art.” Noted Birkenstock wearer Victor isn’t opposed to that, but Aaron is – because that opens the door for people and businesses who want to skirt around anti-discrimination laws.
Also, Victor and Aaron discuss Terry Pratchett’s “boots” theory of poverty, and Aaron cites modern philosopher Richard Rorty. (Hey, you do your wacky morning radio show your way, and we’ll do it our way.)

Trending today: a left-footed kicker gets invited to the NFL combine for the first time in many years – joining a short but prestigious list. Aaron and self-proclaimed leftie Michael Koh (filling in for Victor) discuss the various sports positions where being left-handed is a hindrance – or at least where people think it is.

What’s trending today is a story about lobsters struggling to adapt to warming oceans, but today Aaron refuses to allow the segment to end on a down note – so he and Victor pivot into a brief call-to-action discussion and a conversation about the resiliency of nature. (There’s a lot to do on a local talk show: keep people informed, provide calls to action, offer notes of hope, add new perspectives or bits of nuance to leave listeners thinking a little differently. Can we successfully knock all that out in four minutes?)

Trending today: a spike in chocolate prices are leading the makers of Tootsie Rolls to shift their focus to non-chocolate candies. That includes suckers, like Blow Pops – which leads Victor on a rant about his personal taste in lollipops, and Aaron to remember a classic commercial.

Aaron hijacks today’s segment with a fun question: what’s the worst song to hear over a speaker in a public setting? (Not a bad song per se, but a song that, for whatever reason, really really doesn’t work as background music.) Victor declares a hate for long guitar solos, while Aaron remembers a particular Karma Police-related incident from his own recent past.

Trending today: a recent study that suggests dogs may have effectively domesticated themselves over 15,000 years, without as much (intentional) human intervention as you’d think. Also, Victor and Aaron try to imagine how the switch might have gotten flipped: domestication probably didn’t happen all of a sudden, but what if it did?

Trending today: a shadowy corporation that’s buying up Party Cities, to join a line of tacky products that already includes Chia Pets and Clappers. This sends Victor and Aaron on a tangent about Clappers – especially since Victor still has one installed in his house. (At what point do people take them down?)

Trending today: a survey that finds Americans are personally content but think society in general is in decline. We like the schools our kids attend, but think public schools in general are bad; we like our local news outlets, but think “the media” in general is untrustworthy; and we feel safe in our own communities, but think crime in general is on the rise. (This is also true of Congress: Americans strongly disapprove of Congress in general, but generally like their own representatives – which is why they keep getting reelected, even though Americans claim to hate what Congress is doing.) Aaron adds another facet of the same issue: Americans always tend to think the violent crime rate is on the rise, even when it’s not. (In fact the violent crime rate today is barely half of what it was in 1990!) With all that in mind, Victor suggests we pick a city to identify as “the bad place” where all this negative stuff is allegedly happening – now it’s just a question of which place we pick. (Suggestions are welcome.)

Trending today: a survey that finds about half of Americans think dinner is their favorite meal of the day – and offers some insights about what people do when they’re eating, from chatting with their dinner companions to watching TV to playing video games. (How you do that while eating is a skill we haven’t yet learned.) Also, Aaron teaches Victor about the science of polling.
