Trending today: folks online are complaining about the increasing cost of attending Burning Man. Why does it cost so much? Victor explores that question – and discovers that the festival is subject to heavy cleanup regulations by federal land officials, so it takes a lot of effort (and money) to keep the area debris-free.

Trending today: Krispy Kreme is teaming up with the Girl Scouts for a trio of cookie-themed donuts. Aaron’s not a fan of that idea, but it does make him nostalgic for a favorite childhood dessert. (Michael Koh fills in for Victor.) Also, Aaron disses Henry David Thoreau.

Trending today: new data suggesting an even bigger drop in Canadian tourism to the U.S. than we initially thought – about a 42 percent drop overall, including especially big declines in Florida and Myrtle Beach. (Based on his own recent experience in Canada, Aaron is unsurprised; if anything he’s surprised the drop wasn’t even bigger than that.) But if Canadians aren’t traveling to U.S. beaches – where are they going instead? (Or is all this being caused by an overall economic decline, not a U.S. boycott? Victor says it’s a little of both.)

Trending today: A massive cross-cultural study finds that colors don’t actually affect our moods, feelings or emotions. So why do we identify certain colors with certain moods and emotions? Victor offers a couple possible ideas – but the deeper he goes, the more Aaron starts to think we’ve always been associating colors with contradicting emotions in the first place. (Also, Victor thinks he’s going to get canceled.)

Trending today: Myrtle Beach has a summertime ban on wind-driven shades, like the Shibumi Shade, an increasingly popular beach accessory that was first created by a trio of UNC grads. Myrtle Beach also isn’t alone, leading Victor on a quest to discover why it is that beaches are even considering banning them in the first place. (Aaron thinks it’s all about money.) Also, Aaron gets increasingly delighted every time Victor utters the word “Shibumi.”

Trending today: a new report finding that older songs (more than 10 years old) are making up a surprisingly high percentage of Spotify’s top 100. Also: Victor suggests that one-hit wonders might be a thing of the past (depending on how you define a ‘one-hit wonder’), and Aaron tries but fails to get Victor to sing “Mr. Brightside.”

Trending today: a legal dispute between the Chicago Cubs and a restaurant near Wrigley Field that sells rooftop seats with a stadium view. Do the Cubs have a legitimate monopoly on determining how you can experience the game in person? Victor talks about a relevant federal court ruling in 1938 that also affects the way we watch and listen to UNC games as well – and Aaron plugs a new restaurant in Durham that offers its own view of the Durham Bulls’ stadium.

Trending today: Canadian liquor brands are seeing a big spike in domestic sales, now that Canadians have largely stopped buying American stuff. (All part of Trump’s master plan, no doubt.) Victor is excited about this because it fits his locavore vibe – and because it gives him an excuse to hoard Cheerwine. (Also, Victor and Aaron spar over Coors.)

Victor and Aaron discuss the merits of targeting specific taxes for specific purposes (Victor likes the idea but Aaron’s not sold). Also: Aaron plugs his nonprofit, Victor gets pedantic, and Aaron insists on total agreement.
