Today we travel back in time to 1979 and take a look at the first of two Captain America TV specials. Building off the popularity of The Incredible Hulk series, while not exactly true to the comics, the Captain America TV special was not too bad. Actually, it's probably way better than you remember. While it did fail to launch into a regular series it did get another one shot special.

Karl and Tonya take on the Book of Unusual Knowledge, a giant hardcover trivia book. We pick 3 topics dealing with popular culture and learn more about it. Roll off onto the desert backroads with The Desert Rat this week as we ride along with Lorenzo Lamas in his starring role as Renegade! If you like Bikes, Brawls, and good old-fashioned skullduggery, this may just be your next favorite show!

There were two Superman movie serials produced, one in 1948 and another in 1950.  This week we look at the first where Superman faces an original masked crime lord called The Spider Lady.  The serial is actually pretty decent aside from the low budget and animated flight sequences.  Most of the actors are fine and while Superman might be a little too much on the silly side, he was still considerably better than the much-maligned Batman actors from the same era.

The flagship When It Was Cool podcast returns as Karl and Tonya discuss the 1990s! We talk Beanie Babies (which Tonya use to collect and still has some!), Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, The Golden Girls and Betty White, plus a bonus feature after the main show from our Patreon archive a review of a wacky 1990 TV show - Cop Rock! It may be a new year, but it's time to go back to when you'd race home from school, throw your stuff onto a chair, grab a snack and then flip on the TV to catch your beloved after school shows. Whether it was Ultraman, Gigantor, Spider-Man, or even the aptly-named "Afterschool Special" on ABC, chances are high that you had something you just couldn't miss and Mike and Joe are ready to run down some of their favorites. But first it's Joseph running down his playlist for the SLP VHS Dub Tape Challenge in which he floods us with Drastic Weather Events!

Today we take a look back at the first of the famous Fleischer film animated shorts from 1941 - Superman: Mad Scientist. These animated films were known for being very advanced for their time and still hold up quite well today.  With an epic cinematic score, tremendous voice acting, and exciting plots, it's no wonder the Fleischer Films still are revered today. These films are now in the public domain and available on many streaming services and on YouTube.

Karl and Tonya return for the last show of 2021. We discuss some of the things we got pop culture related for Christmas including our thoughts on how Christmas needs to change. Then we look forward to 2022 what is ahead both for pop culture and society. We discuss social media and more.
