Batman makes his twelfth appearance in the pages of Detective Comics issue 38 from April 1940 and Robin makes his debut! We get the tried-and-true origin of Dick Grayson who sees his acrobat father and mother killed by the mob in what appears to be a tragic accident. Batman knows what really happened and together, he and Dick Grayson, who he trains as his sidekick- Robin, seek justice. The tone of Batman changes starting with this issue, but Robin also straight up murders a dude. Let's talk about it!

During season 2 of the Batman television series, Batman and Robin met two other TV heroes in a cross-over adventure - The Green Hornet and Kato! It was a perfect mash-up of two TV properties and a great way to publicize the Green Hornet TV series, plus, we actually get a fight scene between Batman and the Green Hornet and Robin and Kato (Bruce Lee!). Karl and Tonya visit the true crime genre this episode as we review the new documentary that attempts to answer more questions about the death of Caylee Anthony around July 2008. Her mother Casey was ultimately found not guilty of her child's death but was charged with lying to authorities. Few people, aside apparently from the jury, seem to believe she wasn't at least heavily involved. Since then, Casey has turned on her parents, her father in particular, and has leveled hideous accusations against him. Now, A&E Network has given Casey's parents a lie detector test and the results are in... Come to the gray area with When It Was Cool.

The eighth appearance of The Batman took place in the December 1939 issue of Detective Comics. Batman, does not appear on the cover, instead a man in a red mask and a fedora who doesn’t appear in any story in the comic book graces the cover. However, Batman’s picture and name now appears directly above the Detective Comics logo. This issue is one of the most disjointed and simplistic stories so far in Batman’s eight appearances. It also appears to have been written to take place before his seventh appearance and directly after his two-part battle with The Monk and his vampires as that is referenced at the beginning of the story.

Karl and Tonya from When It Was Cool take a look at the new documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV a 2024 documentary that details the behind-the-scenes world of children's TV programs from the 1990s to the 2000s, focusing on Dan Schneider's tenure as a producer at Nickelodeon. The series was released on both Max and Discovery Plus. This show is dark. Listener discretion is advised, and you shouldn't have to say that about a documentary about kid's TV shows.
