Psalm 35 gives a detailed and personal picture of being hurt by others. For 27 verses, David describes people who opposed him, spoke against him, and even rejoiced when he struggled. He asks God to defend him and intervene on his behalf. But the Psalm closes with a powerful decision in verse 28: “My tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long.”

Being hurt by people, especially those close to us, is one of the most painful parts of living in a broken world. We cannot control what others say or do, but we can control where we fix our focus. Instead of allowing hurtful words to become the narration in our minds, David chose to center his heart and speech on the righteousness and praise of God. When we shift our focus from those who hurt us to the God who loves and defends us, we find peace, strength, and the ability to move forward.
