It's a funny thing - most of us crave attention, approval, significance.

But when we get paid a compliment, it can, for some of us at least, feel uncomfortable.

Usually, I would try to deflect the kind words someone offered, but not anymore...

...and I changed for the best of reasons.

Earlier this week, I was flattered to receive an email from a young woman seeking some advice.

'Mandy' is facing a difficult career choice right now (when was there ever an easy career choice?) and my guess is we've all been faced with making similar decisions in our lives.

I figured the points raised in her email might apply to more than just her and so, with 'Mandy's' permission, I share with you her questions and my response.

Every now and then, life throws you a reminder that you're here for a very short time.

If you're lucky, that reminder is in the form of news about someone else and not you.

Just because it's about someone else, though, doesn't mean you should ignore it, or not be affected by it.

I had such a reminder this past weekend - it's a desperately sad time for a family of a good man who I had the honour and privilege of meeting on a couple of occasions and whose passing has had a greater effect on me than I would have imagined.

It's re-taught me a lesson and I want to get some good out of a bad situation by sharing that lesson with you.

When I first started out on my own, I was focusing on the wrong thing.

I wasn't focusing on offering value.

Then, when I learned to offer value, I was still missing something every bit as important...

...and I'm guessing I'm not alone in that.

Some folks think I'm anti-job.

I'm not.

I'm just anti the wrong job.

In fact, when you find the right person in the right job, it's a beautiful thing.
