Where the Long Tail Ends episodes

  • Still Watching the Skies: Episode 20 "Repo Man & Walker"
A man needs a code. This month Nat, Cody, and Robert explore the punk rock sensibilities of Alex Cox's code of film with two of his 1980's films, the cult classic REPO MAN and his film about American adventurism in Nicaragua, WALKER.

The life of a repo man is one of intensity. And there's some intense feelings displayed towards REPO MAN in this episode. We dig into the lattice of coincidence that makes up the film, ponder the alien in the trunk's similarities to KISS ME DEADLY, and the punk rock sensibilities of the film. And, perhaps we just like hanging out with Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez doing speed and pondering what it means to be a man. So, you better pay attention melon farmers!

How can you follow that up? How about with Ed Harris arguing in sign language with a foul-handed Marlee Matlin in Alex Cox's singular WALKER. The true story of the American conquest of Nicaragua by a rag tag group of mercenaries under the command on William Walker is certainly a unique subject for a feature. It's full of deliberate anachronisms and a terrific Joe Strummer soundtrack. But, is it a good movie? It's certainly an interesting one to debate as we discuss the merits and demerits of the film.

  • Cabin in the Woods Film Festival - The Witch
April has arrived and we're back! Perhaps not quite in the manner you were expecting, but we have a lot to say, however belated, about THE WITCH. Robert Eggers' first feature has been the talk of the internet, so of course we wanted to have our say. In particular, the subjects of feminism and baby mashing come up. Lots and lots of baby mashing.
Fools that we are, we thought that there would be near universal agreement on this film. Obviously we've forgotten about the internet. Once burned, twice shy, but I think we find common ground by the end. Likely because we're not on board with the Church of Satan's endorsement of the film. So as always, thanks for listening!

  • "The Prisoner" microPodcast [Fall Out]
Who are they? Kurt Halfyard and Nat Almiral. Where are they? In the Village. What do they want? Information. Why do they want it? To discuss, inform, and entertain as they recap the 1967 British television series "The Prisoner".

  • Still Watching the Skies: Episode 19 "Godzilla (1954) & The H-Man"
"History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men!" This month Robert, Nat, and Cody turn their attention to attention to two films from Ishiro Honda dealing with nuclear fears, 1954's GODZILLA and 1958's THE H-MAN aka BEAUTY AND THE LIQUID MEN. Unfortunately technical issues rear their heads, but like Godzilla we persevered in the face of technological challenges and if we didn't totally triumph, sorry about some of the sound quality, we managed to deliver a podcast all the same. Special thanks to Matt Gamble who joined the regular trio and delivered a recap on his adventures in the Galapagos before joining in the rest of the discussion.
