The Secret Filter Room

One Woman's War is the story of a remarkable woman who made a valuable contribution to her country and to the history of World War II. As a young officer in the British WAAF, Eileen Younghusband was assigned to the Filter Rooms of Fighter Command, Britain's secret nerve center for Radar's defense against enemy aircraft. The Filter Rooms were so secret that they were not officially recognized until long after the war. Working round-the-clock shifts underground, in difficult conditions, she and her fellow officers, most of whom were young women, had instantly to interpret data from overlapping radar information to detect which incoming aircraft were hostile. It was their vital work which helped to make optimum use of Britain's scarce resources of planes and pilots. A few weeks after her marriage she was posted to Belgium to help detect the launch sites of the V1 flying bombs and V2 rockets which were raining down on Britain after the D-Day invasion. A must read for history buffs!

One Woman's War shows World War II from the WAAF officers perspective. The author places the reader in the filter room and even in the thoughts of those huddled around the plotting tables as they calculate the destination of German aircraft crossing the English Channel. The narrative brings the reader into the thick of the fighting for the defense of London, and one can almost feel the horror at witnessing firsthand the liberation of a concentration camp. There are more occasions, however, when the reader observes the action at a distance as the dedicated plotters receive partial information from those reporting in from coastal radar installations.

A sensitive and thoughtful book.

Christa Wolf has taken a long time in writing this book--and it was truly worth waiting for.

Her themes are both autobiographical -- her loyalty to her own ideology and the DDR, as well as the deep sorrow at having been betrayed by the regime in more ways than one.

Her descriptions of the Jewish emigrants and their children in California are haunting. Her descriptions of Callifornia are quite funny--newcomer that she is.

Angels at the Edge of the World

The narrator, pretty much identical with Christa Wolf, flees Berlin to the edge of the world, in this case Los Angeles, and experiences a controlled nervous breakdown as she awaits the inevitable while enjoying a seemingly cushy fellowship at the Getty Museum. She knows that the Stasi file from her youth in East Germany will be opened to scrutiny and her mild reporting on colleagues many years back will trigger an avalanche of negative publicity, hate mail, and possibly wipe out the previous appreciation of her life's work. She buries her anxiety in a study of the German emigres who came to Los Angeles as refugees from Nazi Germany, their troubles far worse than her own. She tracks down one woman refugee in particular with great tenacity. The past and present intertwine and intrude on each other. The narrator compulsively documents the bizarre local customs of the Angelinos and her fellow Getty scholars along with the fate of earlier emigres and watches helplessly as her own fate suffers at the hands of her compatriots back home. Her technique is to describe events and people in excruciating detail, while leaving out their well known names, that way the reader's preconceptions do not color her depictions until she has finished a portrait. Most disingenuous is the note at the beginning claiming that the people in the book are not real.....This is all plenty real...

Mankells Leben war voll und auch das Ende fand ihn "lebendig". Nach der Lektüre dieses Buches bin ich noch mehr gespannt den Kommissar Wallander Serie zu beenden, denn jetzt scheine ich er besser zu verstehen.

La vita di Mankell é stata piena e anche la fine lo ha trovato vivo. Dopo aver letto questo libro sono ancora piú curiosa di finire la serie del Commissario Wallander, perché ora mi sembra di capirlo meglio.

What did you like best about this story?

Her Silent Tears" by Kara Tollman is one eye opener of a book. A heartbreaking story of the abuse of a child that continues into adulthood. A very well written and talented author.

Not For The Listener Looking For Light Story

The publishers summary suggested that this was a book that touched on everything, every sort of abuse imaginable. The author makes a point of letting the reader know that this is based on the life of a real person a true story.

This must be one of the most depressing books I have listened to in a long time. It does touch on every kind of abuse imaginable from a young child being molested by a stepfather to marrying someone exactly like him in the verbal, physical and mental abuse that she suffered because of that decision.

There did not seem to me to be any redeeming factors for this woman, she was unable to escape the cycle. The phrase that comes to mind is from a country song " If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. Gloom, despair and agony on me." I don't say that to make light of the situation or the subject matter, however it truly embodies everything in the book.

The author made it a point several times in her opening remarks and closing remarks that we must, as a society and individuals know about these abuses and put a stop to them. It is certainly something that I agree with but I'm not sure what audience would benefit most from a book with this subject matter. It seems more appropriate for a classroom for those studying social work or becoming counselors, etc.

This isn't to say I didn't like the book it just left me a bit depressed with the feeling of helplessness.

The narration was fine it was professional and gave life to the main character and her struggles. It is not a book with a pleasant topic and I applaud the narrator for being able to convey, what I think the authors intent was.

Notes: discussions of physical, sexual, verbal & mental abuse beginning with the main character as a very young girl. Strong language, violence and maturity situation

This would receive an 'R' rating for the subject matter alone

Three stars overall, four stars for narration & three stars for the story

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

What an absolutely wonderful audiobook. I laughed (socks, cheese, and manure piles), cried, learned about CP, service dogs, and the ADA. Slugger gave Leigh the courage to live her life fully despite her disability and she gave him unconditional love. Kenda's support was uplifting. A beautiful story of an exceptional dog....VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Well written well narrated story of a young woman with a life long disability and how she learns to cope with her CP with the help of her service dog and special friend Slugger.

Brill writes about her life with her service dog in a way that holds your interest. It is not written to seek sympathy rather the story line is written in honor of the strength and courage that Slugger brings provide to her.

He is the best!

Most definitely would recommend this audible to everyone. I love this story about a great dog! Slugger really did try to help his disabled owner with so much. He was always there and a most faithful companion. It was a good book.

Can't think of another book like this at the moment. Any books where a dog can become more than just a pet would be a great comparison.

What does Tiffany Williams bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Excitement in experiencing life as a person with CP. All emotions and feelings were expressed brilliantly.

How can you not buy this , it's like sitting in a pub whilst Dom pours his heart out. Funny, totally engaging.

If you could sum up Here Comes the Clown in three words, what would they be?

Witty. Honest. Fascinating.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Dom, but also Sam's character. I felt for Stacey, Dom's wife.

Have you listened to any of Dom Jolys other performances? How does this one compare?

I purchased "Look At Me, Look At Me" in fact I pre-ordered it.

I hated it and then took an instant dislike to the author, solely because I hadn't the intelligence to realise it was a spoof/satirical book.

I was wrong, Dom Joly is an extraordinarily clever chap, I grossly misunderstood the quirky humour in the book. I shall now revisit it with an open mind,

Here Comes The Clown made me laugh, but I also empathised wiith the author.

This is simply a superb book,and beautifully narrated.

It's actually a brilliant story and I'd highly recommend it.

Really interesting info contained therein, who knew Dom schooled with Osama Bin Laden? Who knew such skullduggery existed in the world of show business?

FTR I've now publicly apologised to Dom Joly via Twitter, because I was wrong to make an assumption based on one book. It turns out he's actually very nice and has a great sense of fun, he's also a really good author.Buy this book, you won't be disappointed. 10/10

A brilliant book brilliantly narrated

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, I drive a lot for my job so I'm familiar with all the audible favourites , Jon Ronson, Bill Bryson etc... Travel writing is my chosen genre , probably why I first listened to one of Doms books, This latest book is just as good as his last two which is to say very good , his rebellious streak and obvious opposition to authority (I get the impression he finds it hard to do as he's told) is what I find amusing through out his books ! This is one of those audiobooks which you end up watching the hours go down wishing there were more to listen to ! Download this book you will love it
