Making Peace With Adversity and Moving On In Life

CITY OF ANGELES is book two in the moving story of the life of MARLAYNA GLYNN BROWN. I especially liked this second installment of her story. The first book, OVERLAY, was about her life while growing up in Las Vegas being the child of alcoholic parents. Book one was an amazing and unforgettable story. The last paragraph of my review of Overlay:

This is book one in a trilogy and it ends with her calling her mother who has moved to Los Angeles and asking if she could come and live with her for a while. Shes now a teenager and has experienced many things that most people havent at her age. She withdraws herself from school and boards a bus and ends her journal.for now.

Upon arriving in California, Marlayna undergoes multiple other trials and tribulations that most people never experience in a lifetime. This move provides a whole new set of issues for her to learn about and deal with. She manages to hold her own throughout her time in LA but with more mature thoughts and feelings. It ushers in adulthood for Marlayna bringing with it the age of alcohol, failed relationships, learning about drugs, friends, rape, marriage, childrenand divorce. These are just some of the scary things she had to overcome while living in LA during the 1980s. She married a man named Chance and has four stair step children (meaning fairly close in age) by him. Then Chance approached her one day and just decided he wanted out. I think she may have seen this coming with his behavior.

This is an extremely good novel and series. If anyone is reading this and considering this memoir, I would highly recommend it. It should to be listened to in order because its Marlaynas memoir and has a timeline. I applaud her for writing this. While she was raised by alcoholic parents, she does a great job at mothering her own children. This book is involved, engrossing, endearing, happy, sad, and its told with grace and style. Shes a strong, strong woman to have had so much adversity in her life and overcome it. Well, Im not exactly sure one overcomes it but rather, makes peace with it. Adversity is what makes us who we are. I look forward to listening to the last book to see how shes arrived at where she is now in her life and how she came to write these books. I love the way shes stayed friends with Linda Woo all these years and kept track of the people in her life.

ABBY ELVIDGE is the voice for Marlayna in this series. She does a terrific job narrating these bios. Its like sitting down and talking with a friend youve known forever. I cant say enough good things about her work.

Strange narrator

Interesting story written well although slow at times. I personally found the narrator annoying and would not purchase anything of his again.

A lot of bs

I just don't believe this story. In this day and age a Spanish jail just feeding you an orange and a cup of water, it wouldn't be allowed. And then to fly back to England with no repercussions! I don't think so.

Very good read

Thoroughly enjoyed the book and the narration though questioned authors version of events but nonetheless really enjoyed book as the storyline kept me hooked. Recommend

The author shares bits of her life, family, and friends in a humorous light. She tells the stories that you can relate to and even put yourself in as the central character. I enjoyed the book as read, but I think it might be even funnier if you read it yourself. Enjoy!!

Compelling

I thought this was going to be an easy short book to read. I noted that reviews were all over the place for and against. I decided to read it to see what all the controversy was about. I always like to read books about recipients of the Medal of Honor.

This is a short memoir of a young man from Nebraska. It covers his early life in his home state. He graduated from the University of Nebraska as a pharmacist. He joined the Navy went to Officers Candidate School and then joined the Navy SEALs. He was shipped to Vietnam. The part of the book covering the War is short and not too detailed. He tells of several actions he took part in. He tells of a midnight commando raid on a remote village called Thanh Phong in the eastern Mekong Delta on February 25 1969. He says they were caught in a deadly crossfire and unfortunately some Vietnam civilians were killed. He received the Bronze Star for this action. In his last action he describes very little. His platoon was sent to an island in the Mekong River to wipe out a group of sappers. They were caught unexpectedly and a fire fight started. Kerrey said he was caught in the leg by a grenade, and remembered very little of the action. For this action he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

The majority of the book describes his convalesce after have a below the knee amputation. He also briefly recounts some problems with flash backs after returning to Nebraska. The book ends here telling nothing after his convalesces.

I discovered he went on to be a small businessman, governor and then senator from Nebraska. I also learned that after this book was released the government of Vietnam has charged Kerrey with war atrocities.

Overall I found it an easy fast read that was written in a matter of fact way.

fantastic

Loved it! Amazing story about how parents need to be advocates for their kids. Also about how our plans are not always THE plans.

Such an inspirational story

My professor is the author of this book and has talked about her family's story in class. I wanted to read more about it and am so happy I did. The book will make you cry, laugh, get frustrated, and cheer. They are a real family and it's captured through the stories. I highly recommend it to everyone as it shows what you can overcome with love, support, and perseverance. Alex and her family are so inspirational.

An amazing narrative of the difficult and trying yet incredibly unifying family trial that proves to be an inspiration to all who have faced moments they felt were insurmountable. Dr. Dixon and Jessica make the very real, but sometimes embarrassing spectrum of human emotions approachable and helps us all to accept our own struggles with strength, determination and the presence of mind to demand the best from ourselves, for ourselves as well as from and for those we love. A Stroke of Luck reminds us that with a village of loving, caring and dedicated supporters the best of every situation is certain to rise from what seems to be ashes. A must read!!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I was able to play the book I bought once but after that read through it wouldn't let me start the book over. I feel like this was a complete waste of money.

The book was interesting and well written but I found several snippets of it online that may have been sufficient. Articles have been written on his story.

Entertaining and unfocussed

This book reads like a collection of essays that have been stitched together into a somewhat lumpy whole. The topics covered are the author's jewish identity, his family of orgin growing up in London and then later living in different cities and countries, and the cultural & multi-cultural differences of England, Israel and the United States and especially how these differences relate to his jewish identity and to the game of soccer which has been a strong interest all his life. The book is quite funny and most people who read it will enjoy it.

Ain't that a kick in the head?

I don't know much about soccer, but I know a wry, fascinating memoir when I read one, and "Kick and Run" definitely fits the bill. Soccer is the peg on which Wilson hangs funny and poignant reminiscences of his Jewish upbringing in England, his relationship with his ailing father and difficult mother, and his adventures as a newly minted American in a land where soccer meant next to nothing to the natives. In particular, his accounts of coaching youth soccer in an upscale Boston suburb are simply hilarious, and dead on.

not what I expected.

As a Spurs fan, I thought this would be a memoir of following Spurs. It's more a memoir of a mans life who happens to have a love for Tottenham. The author is an engaging presence and writes faithfully of growing up Jewish in 60s England. For that it was a pleasure to read. But don't expect a book on soccer.

Absolutely Brilliant!!!!!!

One of the best books I've read in a long time. Jonathan Wilson is both a scholar and a storyteller. He's like W.G. Sebald if Sebald wrote about sports and had a sense of humor. Soccer may be the through line here, but Wilson uses it to probe deeper, universal themes like family, history, and post-WWII British and American culture. It's really funny too! Soccer fans will love this book, but so will any fans of Sebald, Geoff Dyer, Aleksander Hemon, or even Nicholson Baker. A must read for winter.
