Length: 10 hrs and 6 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-16-16

Publisher's Summary:

Bernt Lund harbours a sickness. He is a monster: in the mind of society, in the mind of his nine-year-old victims' parents, and in the mind of his fellow inmates.

Lennart Oscarsson has a situation. The worst scenario imaginable for the head of Aspss prison's department for sexual crimes. These two men's actions are about to hand DCI Ewert Grens the most profoundly sickening and impossibly sensitive case of his career, and in Stockholm's history.

Pen 33 is both an unforgiving collision between a time-hardened policeman and a truly heinous crime and an unflinching exploration of what people - whether criminals or victims - are capable of when they choose to relinquish self-control.

Anders Roslund is a journalist specializing in criminal and social issues, and his expertise is thoroughly exhibited here

The author team of Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström is not new to the American literary scene, having come to shore in one of the early modern waves of Nordic noir writers that followed the popularity of Stieg Larsson. Their novels featuring Stockholmâs Detective Superintendent Ewert Grens have been published somewhat out of order in the United States, thus explaining why the first installment, PEN 33, is only now seeing publication here. Its release (which would have been impossible without the translation skills of Elizabeth Clark Wessel) is bittersweet, due to Hellströmâs death in early 2017. Of all the books in the series, this is arguably the most important and controversial one.

PEN 33 begins with a Publisherâs Note advising that it portrays sexual violence involving minors. While these reprehensible acts take place off the page and are described in the aftermath (in the crime scenes and the medical examinerâs office), they are no less eye-watering for it. This makes for rough reading --- at least for the majority of the bookâs first half --- and a conundrum, given that at times one cannot help but want to stop reading yet must continue, hoping for a satisfactory resolution.

The monster responsible for these unthinkable crimes is Bernt Lund, an unrepentant and unapologetic child rapist and serial killer. His actions constitute an evil force of nature visited upon the city of Stockholm until his capture and trial. But when he escapes from police custody during a transport, his subsequent actions cause the father of one of his victims to embark upon a course of revenge to effectuate the type of justice that the state appears powerless to enforce. This results in a series of events that turns the entire country on its ear.

The question is asked, as it has been before and will be again: Of what use is the state when it is powerless to protect its own citizens? And to what extent can and should the innocent who act to protect themselves or others be prosecuted? The narrative and the story are straightforward, but the answers and the questions raised are anything but easy, particularly at the bookâs conclusion. Donât be surprised if you hear yourself screaming.

Roslund is an award-winning journalist specializing in criminal and social issues, and his expertise is thoroughly exhibited here. Hellström was an ex-convict who brought his experiences as a criminal and prisoner to this series.

'Gritty' or exploitative?

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed earlier Roslund et al. stories, '3 seconds' particularly. They write with a good sense of pace. This one was different, very different I felt.

The subject of this story is the sex trade, the exploitation of immigrant girls in Scandinavia. Now I am sure that this is a disgusting business, well obviously it is. However, for me, the pleasure of listening was destroyed by the overly graphic and explicit language used to describe aspects of the girls lives. OK for a shock-horror campaign briefing, but I want to listen to a book for fun I quess, and this goes too far for me. I don't really need to hear graphic details of how objects are forcibly inserted into young kidnapped girls "c...ts" ( a word used too often for a story I feel) to make a point.

I probably could have overlooked this at times if the story was going anywhere, it doesn't really, it just wanders from offensive scene to offensive scene.

It's going back.

Titolo: La pietra di luna

Autore: Wilkie Collins

Narratore: Silvia Cecchini

Formato: Unabridged

Durata: 13 hrs and 49 mins

Lingua: Italiano

Data di pubblicazione: 05-10-16

Editore: Collina d'oro

Categoria: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective

Riepilogo Editore:

The last in the popular crime series featuring Fran Varady, from the author of the acclaimed Mitchell & Markby mysteries.

Edna, the dotty bag lady Fran Varady used to see living in a churchyard with only feral cats for company, has crossed her path again. Now Edna is staying in a hostel, spending her days roaming, as before. But Fran begins to see a method to her madness, and even though no one will believe her, she is certain Edna is being followed. Who could be interested in a harmless old lady?

Determined to protect her from this hidden danger, Fran finds herself digging into Edna's previous life, and an old love affair and family quarrel come to light. But by rattling the bones of the past, Fran has uncovered more than she bargained for....

Ann Granger has worked in British embassies in various parts of the world. She met her husband, who was also working for the British embassy, in Prague, and together they received postings to places as far apart as Munich and Lusaka. They are now permanently based in Oxfordshire.

Critic Reviews:

"Period colour is nicely supplied...engrossing story looks like the start of a highly enjoyable series." (Scotsman)

Members Reviews:

Fran Varady is one of Granger's more interesting characters.

This is Ann Granger's seventh Fran Varady novel in the series, I purchased the initial books with this particular character when in London and enjoyed them so much I searched for the followup books in the series. These books and their characters are different than her more well known Meredith and Markby series' but just as enjoyable. Granger presents London from a view not often written about. Fran Varady, the main character, is a real spit fire and lots of fun, but down to earth. The supporting characters are well developed through the series and not ones that you might find in other novels. You really should read the series from the beginning , "Askin for Trouble" is the first book, so that you get the full impact of her characterizations.

Great writer

Ann Granger's books are always great

Always Engaging

Rattling the Bones is another great mystery of those who love English mysteries. All her books are well worth a read.

Another excellent novel in the Fran Varady series

I happened on this series and read all 7. Can't understand why they are so little known! Poor marketing? Publisher not interested? They have excellent plots, great characterisation, excellent and intelligent dialogue. Fran is an unusual and interesting character, so different from the usual heroine of crime novels. And they are funny in a wry way. You won't find Silence-of-the-Lambs-type weird serial killers, or extraordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, but just an honest look at flawed, greedy, heartless or nasty villains of a more ordinary sort. And ordinary nice people being decent. So for that reason, they are much more psychologically realistic than most modern crime novels.

The audio versions read by Kim Hicks are a treat. So treat yourself!
