She lived only for pleasure...until war forced her to find courage she did not know she had, and love where she least expected it. It is 1941, and while Britain is in the grip of war, life in the Far East is one of wealth and privilege.
In Singapore Susan Roper, secure in the supremacy of the British Empire, enjoys dancing, clothes and fast cars, tennis and light flirtations with visiting naval officers - her life is devoted solely to pleasure. When she meets an Australian doctor who warns her of the danger that they all face she dismisses him as an ignorant colonial.
Singapore goes on partying, oblivious to the threat of invasion. The British flag will, they believe, protect them from all enemies. But when Japan invades, Susan finds herself in grave danger. She becomes an ambulance driver and is taken prisoner by the Japanese. Gradually and reluctantly she realises that she has fallen in love with the tough, arrogant and totally unsuitable doctor, but she has to face many hardships and witness terrible events before she can acknowledge the truth.

Loved it!!!!
Loved it! Fast paced novel of World War Two in Singapore. The novel includes danger, romance, torture, heartbreak, family problems, friendships, cruelty, adventure, culture clashes, and more. It does not go into depth, but it keeps your attention all the way. Other excellent authors of the WW2 era are: Judith Lennox, William Jarvis, Erik Larsen, Laurie Graham, Anne DeCourey, and Duncan Barrett. This book deserves A+++++++
A great read
I really enjoyed this book. It started off quite slowly and was a bit light and easy but took me by surprise as it developed. I loved the characters and the style. The author chose to focus on the war's impact on one main character. It's by no means a complete history of the war but does give a detailed perspective on the emotional changes the main character goes through.
I'm a big fan of historical fiction based during WW2 and found this particular novel very enjoyable to read. I definitely recommend.
only for die-hard fans
Reads like a draft - characters are flat and one-dimensional. Novel needs to be fleshed out, especially considering the subject matter. Singapore in WW2 is a big canvas! Avoid, especially at the current Kindle price. I paid $2 in a discount store, which was about the value I got.
