How much do you pay for your AI tools? Your ChatGPT or Claude or Higgsfield or Elevenlabs or Gemini or Midjourney or Runway? Maybe you're just using the free tier, or perhaps you're a professional creative that now has workflows built around a few of them, giving you superpowers for just a couple hundred bucks a month. Well, those days of affordable AI might be numbered. Because you pay far less for those tools than it costs the company to provide you with that service. The compute costs to make just five seconds of that movie you're working on is more than your monthly subscription.
Or is it?
As my guest, Mady Mills, Sr. AI Reporter at Axios, tells me, we literally have no idea. And the big discussion here is about whether AI companies will continue to build out data centers and scale infinitely, which might replace and/or kill us all, or whether the investors will decide they want a return on their money one day and the cost of all these tools skyrockets overnight (see: streaming, Uber, Doordash, etc.) So which outcome are you rooting for? Or is there something in between?
