  • POCcorn - The Secret Life of Bees

The POCcorn podcast reviews films created, directed and/or starring People of Color. Each show uses four questions to describe our thoughts on the film, plus one POCcorn moment we simply MUST discuss in detail.

In this episode, we discuss The Secret Life of Bees and select the "Kitchen Dance" scene as our POCcorn moment. This film, set in the 1960's, presented typical American racism on one end, and offered an atypical respite on the other. Though the film was centered around the white character, Lily, it nearly engulfed her story with a glimpse of black excellence at its best; in the same time period! We as viewers got to know May, June and August; three black women who owned their own land, their own home, their own church and their own business...in the south...in the 60's. The film hinted at the gruesome realities for women, and for black people at that time, but it also showed love, forgiveness and a sense of thriving despite those circumstances. Listen in!

  • POCcorn - The Lovebirds

The POCcorn podcast reviews films created, directed and/or starring People of Color. Each show uses four questions to describe our thoughts on the film, plus one POCcorn moment we simply MUST discuss in detail.

In this episode, we discuss The Lovebirds and select the "Intro Love Story Montage" scene as our POCcorn moment. This film was such a nice kickback rom-com with two of the best comedic actors currently working. The chemistry was believable and their romantic downfall was extremely believable; as the story kind of starts with a breakup. Through the funny banter and years relationship pet peeves, the couple tries to exonerate themselves from a murder they witnessed, while surviving some outlandish scenarios along the way. We loved it, as it was all fun, no fuss. Listen in!

  • POCcorn - Creed III

The POCcorn podcast reviews films created, directed and/or starring People of Color. Each show uses four questions to describe our thoughts on the film, plus one POCcorn moment we simply MUST discuss in detail.

In this episode, we discuss Creed III and select the "Empty Boxing Arena" scene as our POCcorn moment. As Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut, this film checked all the boxes. There was drama, there was action, there was love (both romantic and platonic), there was family dynamics, and there was the classic underdog storyline that has been so cherished by Rocky/Creed fans everywhere. Loved every moment of it. And that POCcorn moment was truly an iconic cinematic experience. Listen in!

  • GTLS: "Girlfriends Talking Living Single" Season 1 Ep. 10-12

Listen in as we talk about "Promotions in the Workplace," "Fights in Friendships," and Surprise Birthday Parties."

We are talking the one, the only, the incredible, "LIVING SINGLE!" (And yes, you may read that in your best singing voice)   This show gave so many things to so many people, including Permission. Permission to be an unapologetic, business-running, career-killing, fashion-styling, sweet summer-child'n black woman who was both independent but not alone. The relationships between these women appeared authentic on-screen, the humor kept us all wanting for more, and the writing gave its audiences doses of reality whether they were ready for it or not.
