Michael talks about his unlikely journey to becoming a scientist. He talks about going to St Mary’s Grammar School but failing chemistry. He repeats his A levels and goes on to university, but in a random twist of events, he decides to become a priest.

After the first two years of his priesthood study, his superiors questioned whether he was certain about being a priest and advised him to take a year to think it through. The priests said they sensed that he wanted to get married, so they advised him to go on dates.

During this year, he met the woman he would eventually marry. After deciding that he wasn’t going to be a priest, he began to apply for jobs but had no luck. Then one day out of the blue he got an offer to do a PHD in science. He accepted and is now a top scientist working at Queens University. 

 On top of being a scientist, he is also a purple belt in BBJ. He talks about how he got into the sport and getting battered on the first day. After years of going consistently, he is now operating at a high level and competing regularly. 

This is a fascinating story of twists and turns about a young scientist from West Belfast.

This week the lads reminisce about being teenagers and summers gone by from Tyrone being a firebug to Tommy smoking paper.

John Hutchinson joins us to talks about his humble beginnings in Donegal. Leaving school at 13 to work on building sites with his family. Then he starting boxing late but going all in with it.

He tells about travelling everyday on the bus from Donegal to Belfast to train. Eventually he made the move to the pro ranks and headed down under to Australia to purse his career.

His boxing career took him around the world and while training in Thailand he unwittingly began to train MMA fighters whilst still being an active fighter himself. His first fighter won a world title which has had a snowball effect, making him one of the most sought after trainers in MMA. 

 Currently, John is taking a break from coaching fighters and is thinking of opening his own gym to train professional boxers. His long term goal is to train a local boxer and get them to the world championship. 

This conversation is a brilliant insight into the transition from fighter to coach.

Tyrone was invited to speak at a north Belfast youth club, but he told Tommy they were both invited so he didn’t have to go alone.

The good weather inspires Tyrone to go on a mountain hike, but he gets lost and goes off track. He believes that his weak bladder is due to school teachers not allowing him out of class to use the toilet when he was a child.
