The Lark Classic Cask is an Ausskey from the Lark Distillery core range. I grabbed this from a gift pack on clearance from last Christmas and so begins the first of three Lark's I've reviewed since the Symphony No. 1. I also dive deep into the Modern History of Whisky in Australia and Larks role in it, as well as the casks they use and their curious choice of bottle. They say it's a Classic...but is it really?

This Ausskey comes from South Australia, and despite a bumpy ownership early on, they've produced several very interesting Whiskies including this one...named after the Winery whose barrels it was matured in...the Penny's Hill Winery. It snagged a Gold Medal at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards, but does it live up that? Let's see...

At a Whisky Flight tasting in the Marlborough Region of New Zealand on the South Island, I asked for their best New Zealand Whisky they had, and was offered a sample of this. It's a Whisky aged for 8 Years in ex-Honey Mead Casks from a small town in the North-West Corner of the South Island, and it...is...amazing.

This was the most expensive and oldest Whisky in the Advent Calendar I've been working my way through. I look into some of the history of the Glen Grant Distillery, it's capacity and then try to decide if the most expensive and oldest offering in the Advent Calendar, was actually the best...or not.

When one of the family that owned the Lantenhammer Distillery set out to build his own and named it Slyrs, many in Germany weren't paying too much attention. When they started producing world-class Whisky they quickly made a name for themselves. This offering was finished in ex-Pedro Ximénez Casks and the resulting Whisky is quite special.

The Kinglake Distillery is off-the-grid in rural Victoria and is surrounded by Australian Bushland. This Ausskey has an interesting mash bill, and is predominantly aged in American Oak but also some French Oak ex-Tawny Port barrels, which is unusual for Australian Whiskies and leads to quite an interesting and complex dram.

The disused Corowa Flour Mill was sold for a dollar, transformed into a small craft Distillery with no plans for much expansion, but when their First Drop sold out inside 24 hours their plans were changed. Situated on the banks of the mighty Murray River in New South Wales, the Mad Dog Morgan is matured in Muscat Barrels from the nearby Rutherglen Winery to create something, that's pretty special.
