I appreciate the opportunity to give people some background.  Jay McAninch CEO of ATA Create unity within our industry. Trade associations are a different creature, different than a lot of our bowhunters and archers are familiar with because most of them belong to groups that are non-profits.  But there are groups that are aligned with memberships like folks who shoot target archery, folks who hunt whitetails in all kinds of different ways, folks who may just like a particular kind of equipment. The difference in a trade association, which is real important to remember, businesses belong to trade associations, not individuals. So we have retailers, manufacturers, distributors, all the different facets of the industry including press and media.  Jay McAninch CEO of ATA - create unity within our industry

We needed to build our organization from the inside out

I gave you that background because when I came, one of the things that I felt was really important is that we needed to build our organization from the inside out. And by that I mean we needed first to aggregate all of the companies in the industry so that they not only worked together but got along and had a shared vision and shared mission that they wanted to accomplish. We did a strategic planning effort in 2001, and we pursued that really strongly for the first half dozen or so years, 2006, '07, '08, through that period. And what we really then was build the show, build the organization, try to create unity among the companies in the industry folks so that we were all pulling in the same direction.

The next step we got to sort of a second tier was how do we get grow archery and bowhunting in a very methodical, very practical but long-term way so that we had real results. Being a mile wide and an inch deep is fun because you have a lot of context, but you're not sinking tap roots and you're not really getting things done. I've been in this business now just 40 years now this...a year or so ago, and I have not seen the kind of numbers increase over my career. And I take some responsibility for that.

So one of the things we did, Bruce, was we started looking at how do we create funding for programs that have at least a three to five year plan? How do we create infrastructure out there? And here's what I mean by that. If we're gonna say that a state agency or a school or a parks and rec program is truly going to truly help people get into an activity, then you have to have a few things to make that happen. You have to have staff. You have to have a budget. And you have to have a program that you're gonna implement. It's not different than in manufacturing. You can't say you're gonna manufacture a product if you don't' have a facility, if you don't have people working for you, if you don't have a budget, and you don't have raw materials. So that was why we started a fairly nationwide, strong nationwide effort to build the kind of programs, train the kind of people, and make sure the kind of staff were in place to get things done.

So that was our second phase and then our third phase was really trying to put all those pieces together to try to create a really strong foundation. Underneath, all of archery and bowhunting could not only have fun but could grow and flourish and really get to the point where we are today. And I like to think that, today, when you look around, all the folks that are out there like you and many others in the media are seeing a breadth and depth to archery bowhunting that we haven't seen before. And I think that a lot of that has come from an industry that has been united but quietly in the background providing funding,

Well, how it came to be was I'm sitting in a deer stand on a tree line and basically, if you can envision that, we have 180 degree view. And I've always shot right-handed, so sure enough, buck shows up off to my direct right, which means he's looking dead at me. And I've got to switch hands. I can't move. A lot of us are probably used to using our current strap

A lot of us are probably used to using our current strap, including our elbow and bringing that torque to our shoulder, which gives us more control over our target. I don't know who came up with it, but you just want to make that kill shot. You don't want to shoot it somewhere where you're just going to hit the animal, because I'm just not into it. So what this does is on firearms that have a swivel, which all guns that have a strap do, this is incorporated into the fore-grip of where the swivel, and it attaches there. It's kind of hard to explain verbally how it works. I don't really know how to explain it other than that. But it's something you actually have to see and try out and see what it does for you. we do have some spots on YouTube and, of course, Facebook, our website, Twitter and Instagram. Matter of fact, a fellow we met through the social media, Kris Helms, who's with the Spirit of the Wild Ranch, has just put up a short one on Instagram showing how it works. He did a really good job of explaining the function of Muzzle Force.

As days weeks’ months went by, Doctors found out by MRI that I've been living with 3 surgical hernias. But I said to myself to find something anything I used to love to do. So I decided to develop a product strictly for deer.

I became very excited when I put Buck Nutz beside several brands of Bait and or Attractant. What I and other hunters have found, is more deer showed up and stick around. Even when Buck Nutz has been devoured, deer continue daily to spot and dig ground until they've been satisfied. Let's see. My favorite deer story? Well, I guess it'd probably be a deer I shot at 10 yards. I didn't have my camera with me. I knew that I was on 200 class deer. And I was up my stand. And I like to hunt over scrapes during the rut. I'll stay there all day if I have to.

And I happen to be up my stand. And I'm hunting over this scrape. And I look down this old logging road. And I'm not on the main scrape. I didn't know that there was another scrape down this logging road. So I waited for the deer to pass through and get dark. And then after it got dark I climbed down. And I moved my deer stand down to that spot. And I came back a day and a half later, and climbed up my stand. And about five minutes, between the same time that he had came by the day before that I'd been there hunting, here he came.

And he came in from behind me. And I had some Buck Stop 200 Proof Doe Estrous on my rubber boots. And I had made a half circle with it sprinkled on my boots, and then had walked up to the scrape and I'd left the bottle in the scrape and I covered it up with an oak leaf. And before I walked back to my tree, I put a couple of drops on my boots.

And I was 10 yards from the scrape. And I climbed up my deer stand and this deer came in from behind me. It wasn't the big one that I wanted to see. But he had a 22 and a half inch spread, he's a 10 pointer. And like I said, I'm hunting in a fork of a tree. And I'm thinking, my goodness. He came in from behind me. How am I gonna get turned around?

And this whole time that I'm locked up he's rearing up on his hind legs, and he's got this pin oak. And he's got it bent plumb over to the ground and he's just shaking the fire out of it. I mean, just tearing it up. You would think that he was mad at the world. And then he stuck his...now, he did a lip curl. And when he stuck his head down in the scrape and he knocked that bottle of doe pee over. And he threw his nose up. And he tracked me right to my tree. And I had dropped a Three Musketeer bar wrapper that I had wadded up and I thought I'd put it in my pocket. But I missed my pocket, and it was on the ground.

And he stopped right under my stand. And I'm thinking, oh, good Lord, please, don't look up

And he stopped right under my stand. And I'm thinking, oh, good Lord, please, don't look up. Don't look up. And I thought he might have smelled that wrapper, but he didn't smell anything. And when he turned. He turned just like a cow, and went right back to his scrape.

But when he did, I got turned around and I got my bow in between the fork. And he started tearing that red oak tree up again. Pawing and scraping, and finally he started urinating in a scrape. And when he did, that's when I shot him at 10 yards. I heart punched him and he ran about 60 yards until dead.

To start off, you need to realize that you need to have fun with the process. When you're looking for a recreational property, whether it's to hunt, or fish, or take your kid camping, or all of the above, you need to realize this isn't buying your house. When you buy your home that you live in and you spend every day there, that can be a stressful process because it's a lot of money. You're going to be there all the time. Well with recreational ground, you're doing it because you want to, not because you have to. So first and foremost, keep the process fun. Don't get stressed out about it. It's supposed to be fun. And let that guide you in the process. If it becomes not fun, then postpone the search for a little while, till you're in a better place, or it just feels right. Because so many times I work with clients that want to buy land. They get fired up about it, but it's a stressful situation. And I just have to calm them down a little bit and get them to back off a little bit because this is supposed to be fun. We like to hunt. We like to fish. So let's keep that first and foremost.

And if you're going to do that, then just kind of basically know what you're looking for. I'm not talking about a budget. We want to have a loose number that's out there. But Kind of know what you would like to do with it. Are you looking for a deer-hunting place? Would you like to fish on it? Or what kind of condition are you in physically? Can you handle a place that has some pretty steep terrain? Or do you need something that is a little bit more flat? Just make out a list of what you're looking for and then it's time to go interview people.

A lot of people out there own businesses or are n management positions, and when you're looking to hire somebody to come in and work for you, to do a task, whatever it is, you typically interview a few people to figure out who's the best fit to work for you. Your real estate agent is no different whatsoever. You need to go out and look at somebody in the market. You kind of have a geographic area that you would like to buy your property, well look at two or three of the agents that are busy, or active, or have a lot of listings in that area. You can find that information by looking at Landwatch.com or Lands of America, and just find somebody that has got a lot of listings in your area and interview those guys.

Find somebody that gets where you're coming from, somebody that you can relate to, somebody that you can trust. And know that the agent that's working for you when you're buying land, that's not costing you anything 99% of the time. They get paid by the seller, whoever is selling the property. So you're getting professional advice from somebody you trust and it's not costing you a penny. That's where I think you get started in finding your piece of property.

And funny thing about that, we had a grand opening at Cabela's in Lexington, Kentucky a couple of weeks ago, and I met Terry for the first time, and we were both kind of shocked and blown away that we both had the same last name that was spelled exactly the same. He's met some other Drury's before and they didn't spell their name the same way. It was D-R-E-W-U-R-Y, and he was just kind of psyched that he had finally met another Drury that actually had the same last name. And, of course, ironically, I found it pretty cool too because, other than the ones that's in my immediate family, I've not met a whole lot of them either. So that was pretty neat. I like when the person sells me their self because you can build on a friendship, on a relationship. You can't build on a product. Now it is hard without people that is willing to come in and give you a product, whether it be free or a discount or working out a deal, a 5-year plan, a 10-year plan, with good products, with good tools of the trade. It makes chasing down whitetails or turkeys or ducks and geese, it makes it all easier.

about a treestand mishap a few years ago and I know. And I was hunting out of a wooden ladder stand, and I was 24 feet in that booger and a nice doe come walking by. And she circled me a few times. And when she presented a shot at 20 yards, I commenced to draw back and I settled in on my pin, and I made the shot. And after 10 or 15 minutes, I went to get down and look for blood and when I did, I didn't have the utility rope. So, I had the bow in one hand and a ladder in the other, and as soon as I stepped down off the platform, I thought I had the bow and the ladder clapped in my hand, and I went to remove my other hand and my feet just went right out from underneath of me. And I just started doing somersaults and back flips out of this tree stand. And I landed on a log and broke it in two with my back and of course, I was terrified, thought I was paralyzed. But after a while, I sit there and wiggled my toes but come to find out, didn't find the deer, which just added insult to injury.

You're grocery shopping in Mother Nature. I eat everything I kill. I'd rather have venison, wild turkey, fresh caught fish than I would food from a fast food joint or a convenience store any day of the week. There's no byproduct. There's no steroids. I just think that hunting, it's a gift from God and it is what it is.

It's a sanctuary, and I believe that that's what makes us all who we are. Jim Shockey always says, "It's part of who you are; it's not something you do." And it brings a lot of people together.

Lakeisha is a pro-staff member for Women Hunt Too and Deaux Girls. We are also part of the field staff for the HFJ (Hunt Fish Journal). We have four beautiful kids being raised in the outdoors. We really enjoy hunting and filming our hunts together as a family.

Hunt Fish Journal is about the science of deer hunting. And there's some guys, Jerry Everhart, he's an old experienced deer hunter and he's taught me some methods, I believe, that has actually saved me some years of trial and elimination and a lot of mistakes. But basically it's just to sum it up, we've found out certain things, certain ways to harvest whitetails more efficiently and more effectively. And it involves not putting a lot of time on your stand, using quality scent, real deer scent, and actually being able to calculate the rut.

we will tell you that these scrape methods and stuff that we learned from Hunt Fish Journal, they definitely played a big role, and basically that's just pretty much what the whitetail was coming in to do, I believe, is to check a scrape and so...: Yes, yes, yes. We have swamp donkeys like that in the Delta area and a lot of people really don't know about it. And it's really like the farmers. They really keep those secrets and stuff to themselves, and there are so many bucks that have been killed. There's a local store in Tunica and I'm going to tell you something, that deer is just like any other deer in that book and there's some even bigger.

But a lot of these guys, they really don't care about putting these bucks in Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young. They just don't care. So it's a real big kept secret, I guess, until now. I hope they don't get mad at me.

Travis has gotten more and more involved in managing the deer herds in his hunting areas by being on the field staff RAKS. Travis is a pipeline technician and he gets to spend a lot of time in the field working with landowners and gaining new access to hunting areas Travis believes by planning and hard work comes great rewards.  Travis Beck is harvesting only mature deer

What makes RAKS so special?

Travis: I was just impressed by the ingredients that are in his products. It seemed like some of the other products I've used in the past, you get such a small amount. And with RAKS you get quality, and you get quantity with RAKS. I got a Buster Block. I'm looking at right now, and this thing is 33 pounds.

It's something that really will last a long a long time if you got a tree stand. I've got several stands where they're a half mile away. And walking out there every couple of weeks to pull your cards, and put more mineral down, or type of feed so you can get your trail camera pictures. Now, with this block, I can put an eight gig memory card in my trail camera, and just get this Buster Block out there, and put some of the RAKS Stack feed around it to draw the deer towards it. And with that eight gig card, I can get 6,000 pictures on there.

So I really don't have to disturb my area as much when I'm using the Buster Block. And then with the mineral, if you compare the mineral to other minerals, the ingredients, it's exactly what you're white-tail bucks, or any mule deer, white-tail. The calcium in there. The counts are just way higher than everybody else.

I got to put some mineral out this last weekend. I took my son out with me, and we got to put some out. And it's just a heavier mineral than your other stuff. It's almost like a salt. And this stuff has got more ingredients for the deer. And it almost has a natural smell.

Something that is natural to the deer, and will pull the deer to it. Rather than something that smells like an apple, or something like pears. And I'm actually really impressed just by the smell and the ingredients in there, verses some of the competitors. And like you said, the flashy bag, it draws you to it. But if you look at your ingredients, RAKS verses another brand, and you look at your price, you're getting the quality of minerals for your deer, verses buying a flashy bag.

Well, I got into archery, I think it was back in 1999. I got into archery just started, just like everybody else, just trying to figure it out. And I think I went five years before I actually got my first deer. And it's just something I've really enjoyed. And since then, my wife and I have had two kids.

And I've got my wife shooting. I have my daughter shooting. My son's shooting. And there's some 3D fun shoots that we do here at the local archery shops in the summer. And in the winter months, we'll do those. And then during the week, if we can, we at least try to get out the range two to three times a week just to go and shoot together.

And it almost just brings us together, and we bond over it. And I really enjoy watching my son shoot and advance with learning to aim and hold steady. And it's a joy. I really enjoy it.

Well, with training for archery season, it starts right now in the spring. Your trail cameras, and running your minerals, and your feeds. And I will really step up my practice in the summer time. Even if it's in my basement shooting 10 feet. I'll shoot, and shoot, and shoot. Anymore, I've got into building my own arrows.
