well I've been hunting for 24 years now and a big hunter, and I'm also a, good or bad, a perfectionist. And so through my years of hunting in Michigan really there one thing that can really bother me a lot when I was in the woods. It was the fact that I couldn't come and go, I couldn't set up stands without making noise. It didn't matter really what I did. It was a big problem that I had, and you can do kind of good sometimes, and you can totally fail other times.  Adam Lewis of Sound Concealment  "How deer hear" But I really found that making noise was a big problem that I had and through talking with other hunters, found out it was with them too.

So that is I guess the simple, in a nutshell version of why I started Sound Barrier LLC was just to help hunters in area that really isn't being addressed in the hunting community, isn't being talked about too much in the hunting community, and I truly believe is the biggest way that hunters can improve their game, take their hunting to the next level, and increase their success by really getting past the deer's ears, and knowing about how deer hear, and how sounds that us hunters make affect them is a big part of that. So anyways, that's why I started it.

Bruce: So folks, get your pen and paper out, because Adam's going to start out with how deer hear. So Adam? Adam Lewis of Sound Concealment  "How deer hear"

probably for the last four years or so I've done a lot of research. I guess it was a process. It starts with, man, this is a problem.

Adam: Yeah, so probably for the last four years or so I've done a lot of research. I guess it was a process. It starts with, man, this is a problem. And then it starts with an idea. For me, it was the idea for a product, which was how can I keep myself from being heard by deer? And that process started a lot of research into, well, what is known about how deer hear? And there really isn't a whole lot out there, not a lot of scientific research, and it's a lot of guesswork really with hunters. So I started doing research and was able to find some science behind it, and did a bunch more of my own, and so that's been part of the quest the last four years. And in that process, learned quite a bit about how deer hear.

Also did testing on well, these noises that I make in the woods, whether it be crunching through leaves, breaking branches accidentally, clanging equipment, just these unavoidable hunter noises, how far those travel and how that really affects deer and your hunting success. So it was a process, like I said, over the last four years.

So the interesting thing about deer.

So the interesting thing about deer. Some people think that deer can hear a lot better than humans. That is a myth. They really can't hear better than humans, but they hear different than humans, and in ways that really make them obviously very difficult to hunt, as all hunters know. And well adapted and suited to stay alive. That's the whole point. So what I found was basically if you want to compare how deer hear to how we humans hear, this is a reference point where we're similar in one way, and that is just the what I call the sound pressure level, or the loudness of sounds that we can detect.

So for example, something that sounds loud to us is also going to sound loud to a deer. Something that is soft to us will also be soft to a deer. And they can't, as far as loudness goes, they can't pick up a mouse in the leaves a mile away. They don't have bionic hearing like that, like some people might think. So that's the one way they're similar.

Well there's three ways where they're very, very different, and that's put them at a distinct advantage, and us hunters at a very distinct disadvantage. The first way, real obvious, is what they call the pin eye of their ear, which is their outer ear.

I've been bowhunting since age 17 and have taken at least one big game animal every years for 36 years. I never buy meat, with the exception of bacon now and then. My family only cooks what I can kill or catch. I'm proud to serve as the President of the Pope and Young Club but even more proud to serve the hunting community in a way that might improve the future of all hunting and bowhunting in particular.

I spend a lot of time on habitat improvement and encouraging all Bowhunters to get involved in some positive way that will ensure our future. My biggest goal aside from my next hunt is to get as many Bowhunters as I can to get off their duff's and do something, no matter how small to ensure our future.

I'm going to talk more about just the average hunter.

: Yeah. I'm going to talk more about just the average hunter. Because a good percentage of the serious Pope and Young Club members, they belong because they want to help the sport. And they're already active in their state organizations, and they do a lot of work service-wise.

But what we really need to get across to people, bow hunters especially because we're such a solitary sort; if we don't get off of our butts and get active, and do something to help the sport, to help the wildlife, to help habitat. To help the impression that other people see, eventually, we're going to be outnumbered and we're going to lose what we've worked so hard to get.

And it doesn't take a lot of work. It could be just as small as writing a letter to your congressman. That has to be bare minimum that people are willing to do. So beyond that, there are so many things you can do to ensure the future of your sport. Whether it's going to game department meetings and speaking out for or against things, going to legislature speaking out for and against things. And I understand not everybody's cut out for that.

And I think we all owe it to our sport, for the future of our sport, to get up and do something

But if you were to get more active in, say, the state organizations and help out on some of the smaller ways, that frees up time for some of the hardcore workers to go do some of the harder things.

Nick Sweeny brings it home with Horn Star and the Great Outdoors

Well, about a year ago, me and one of my brothers and a buddy of mine, we had posted some photos on Facebook and some other social media sites. I'd never been really bullied or anything like that on social media for anything I've ever done. But it's becoming more and more popular that the anti-hunters, the PETA people, and stuff like that, they really are starting to hound down on trophy hunters, recreational hunters, the outdoorsmen in general. I had a string of animals that I had posted and got a lot of negative feedback. So we wanted to create a place where hunting and fishermen can go, and it's exclusively hunting and fishing. That way, you don't have to sift through all the other stuff that you might not like on Facebook, or stuff that's irrelevant to what you're searching for. But if you're an avid outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, you go on Horn Star, and that's what you're going to get. Everything is outdoor, hunting, fishing related.

You're not going to get the ridicule and stuff like that. It doesn't matter if it's a trophy, if it's just a cow elk or a doe deer. You can pose with your photo, because it's all about the memories, to me, and sharing that with everybody else. No hunt is ever the same. I refuse to believe that. You know, I hunt mainly in Wyoming, but I love watching people from Wisconsin, Indiana, Kansas, the Midwest, and the species that they get to hunt. The people from Alaska, Canada, and the species they get to hunt. I love that stuff, and I love being able to look at that stuff.

The problem is is on Instagram, Facebook, and stuff like that, I mean, I have to scroll through hundreds of pages before...unless it's in the heart of hunting season, hundreds of pages before I get to see the actual stuff that I want to see. Bruce: Thanks for that. And shed season, you're in the Big Horn, so I don't know how much snow is up top. But are you out in the plains, now, shed hunting?

Nick: You know, this year is a lot different than any other year for northern Wyoming. In the 34 years that I've lived here, this is the least amount of snow I've ever seen. So shed hunting for elk just began. We're just starting to get out there this last week. Usually around St. Patrick's Day is my target date for when everything starts dropping, but to each his own. Everybody has their own days. That's just my preference.

Jeff Vane is the Bowhunting Savage

So Bowhunting Savage. Come, we gotta talk about this. What's going on?

Jeff: Well, last summer I was trying to figure out what I want to do with this. And I just took a few things that I was really interested in. One was bowhunting. I just started in July, so I've only been bowhunting for a short period of time. And I just fell absolutely in love with the sport. Then I started researching Cameron Hanes, Remi Warren, Steve Rinella and just listened to these guys. And I just branched even further.

Then Savage, it kind of came from the inspiration from Joe Rogan's podcast because that's what he liked to call people. But then I really sat down and digested what the word meant to me. And it's like it's somebody that will go above and beyond, the passion to make sure they always accomplish what they want to do, whether they're successful in the field or not. They're out there at 4:00 in the morning waiting for the sun to rise and waiting for the deer to start waking up out of the bedding.

Let's talk about the hunting tradition and where the heck that came from.

Jeff: For me, it started with my dad, watching him get up at 3:00 in the morning, hearing him go out with...he was a muzzleloader himself, and just hearing the stories and the camaraderie about everything. Because it's not necessarily about the hunt or the harvest. To them, it was mostly getting together and talking about their experience.

You'd wake up, and they'd be coming back off the field at 8:00, 9:00 in the morning covered in snow, 13 below zero. And they're just out there talking about everything and seeing how they're going to dress their afternoon set and such. But it was just the breakdown of everything and then going out and being taught by some of his best friends, teaching me how to shoot, and just learning the tricks. Just listening for the snap of a twig or what's the difference between a squirrel.

And it was just all breaking down that humbleness of it all, because it's like these guys have all been hunting for decades, prior to my experience, so they're just dropping me with a bunch of knowledge. And it was just very humbling.

And hunting's a good way to teach people that.

: I think it's something that we need to strive for because with everything going on with the media and such with that, you really have to sit down and look at how we're going to approach the future because population centers are getting big. People are getting tired of the factory farming. And hunting's a good way to teach people that.

I just listened to a good podcast with Joe Rogan where a hardcore vegan transitioned into hunting. And it's more of a paleo diet, where he eats and he catches his own fish. And that's what changed his entire life, because he wanted to see what else is out there. And he got into hunting out in Vermont and just fell in love with it.

What I like about the hunting and why we need to keep it still passionate throughout the entire United States is that it brings unity. It brings camaraderie. And it allows everybody to relate and talk about their problems that they've experienced in the field. And like, "Okay, how can I adjust this?" And then on top, that opens up to a whole new wide community. Like you said, 17-plus million people out there. Everybody's going to have a story because everybody's going to be able to give two cents about something.

Okay. Jordan Budd her career journey to Best of the West TV  Basically on the hunt I am the videographer, I am the in field producer, I'm behind the camera all of the time, I go with the guys that go on the hunts. This last year I did four big horn sheep hunts and a couple of deer hunts, an elk hunt and couple of whitetail hunts in the east. And then now it's kind of, we're getting towards bear season which will be fun, we've got a couple bear hunts planned and now when it's kind of the off season it's when you're sitting at the desk in front of the computer and you're taking all this footage that you've taken on these hunts and you're putting them together and you're making them into this story and putting them out on television.

Bruce: So tell the listeners how many hours of film do you have to get to get a 30 minute show?

Jordan: We figure right around 3 hours of solid footage will get you your 30 minute show, it's like 21 and a half minutes of actual run time.

Bruce: So folks, that's a lot of time, that's a lot of filming and then you've got to come back and do the post production work. How much time is involved in that? So you're out in the field, you get the show in the can and now we're back in post production.

Jordan: Putting them together, yup. I figure a week or a week and a half of really being able to get into the computer and just go, to completely finish it out with color correction and audio and graphics and interviews and all that stuff, to get it put together I figure right around in there, a solid week or a week and a half.

Bruce: Let's go down this trail a little bit about education of up and coming hunters, I know that's one of the three things you wanted to bring out on the show. Why don't you take a few minutes and share with the listeners?

So listeners, especially all you guys and gals out there that say, "How do I?" Jordan figured out how do I get into the outdoor industry. She took an opportunity, she became relational with selffilm.com and she was responsive and she built a relationship with the guys there and they invited her on. Jordan: Yup, yup, that's correct. And I just always thought seizing opportunities as they arise, you have to take those opportunities as they arise because if you can't or you don't want to or it's not ideal at the time, there's a good chance that those opportunities aren't going to arise again. And just taking an opportunity and taking a little chance, it can get you a long way because of just relationships building and you start meeting new people and you get your network going and it just kind of all builds up from there.

Welcome to another edition of "Whitetail Rendezvous." This is your host, Bruce Hutcheon. Folks, I'm really excited to connect you with a couple of guys that got some products coming out of Wisconsin. It's Crosswinds Brand, and they're launching a scented soap and lotion line for hunters today. The two men are Steve Clothier and Tim Roehrig, from Sherwood, Wisconsin. Steve and Tim, welcome to the show.

Steve: Thanks for having us, Bruce. Really appreciate it.

Tim: Hey, Bruce. Thanks.

Bruce: You're welcome. So let's jump into it. We're gonna talk about a lot of different things in the next half-hour, guys. Let's talk about why did Crosswinds Brand start. And where's it going?

Steve: Well, Crosswinds started, oh, about three or four years ago. Tim and I have been avid bow hunters the last 20 years and using some of the products that were out there and just not happy with some of the sold products, causing . . . especially during the rut. We were hunting several days in a row, and you jump in the shower, and your fingers start to crack and bleed, and your skin starts to chafe and itch. So we decided that there's got to be a better way. There's got to be a solution. So we started developing or trying to develop a better product. It took about eight months to try and formulate a better product that had moisturizing properties and scent-masking properties.

Bruce: So just tell me, guys. What's so special about the brand? You can go to Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's or any retailers, any place on the web, and everybody seems to get a better lotion or potion. Here you are, saying, "Wait a minute. Our stuff is different." Let's share with the listeners why your stuff is different.

Tim: You know, in our minds, [inaudible:00:02:03] right now. Products that are out there say they're gonna take away your odor, but the thing we're gonna say is that you cannot eliminate all human odor. That's why so many hunters now are going to [inaudible:00:02:16] and they're going to other things, trying to cut down on the odor that is coming off the human body as you're hunting. With our products, we have four different scent-masking soaps that can make you smell like a pine tree, can make you smell like dirt or earth if you're hunting agricultural land, can make you smell like a cedar swamp, or it can just take the scent away if that's what you really choose. I know a lot of hunters prefer that.

What we want to say is that, number one, our products have been very, very successful in the field. When you're looking at the products that are out there, I think that their products are designed for the hunters who want to go out and harvest deer. We think our products are better because, A, we have moisturizer in ours. So your skin feels good when you walk out in the field. B, any odor that is leading you, and a deer is smelling it, it's gonna smell like the natural environment you're hunting in. If we can do that, and we're saying that we can, you're gonna be pretty successful in the field. That's ultimately our goal, is to help hunters be as successful as possible when they're sitting in the stand.

Bruce: Guys, the name of our show is "Whitetail Rendezvous." So we want to have a lot of rendezvous with whitetails in the field every fall. Give us a couple examples of where you know . . . You might have a video, but you know firsthand the product made a difference. Steve or Tim, share one or two of those experiences with us.

Tim: The past year, I was sitting in a stand, coming off of a marsh, coming up into a hay field on the corner of a fence line, where the fence line ran into the marsh. I was not expecting the deer to come from behind me, and behind me was a bean field. There was a small island in the middle of it, probably about an acre big. My wind was blowing that way. I thought, "Man, the deer are gonna come out of this marsh,

Jay: Sure, yeah.  Jay Scott Host of Big Buck Registry hear How to Hunt Big Bucks in New England. Well I say that deer hunting, I've learned a ton talking to my interviewees, guests on our show and deer hunting for me is definitely an all year round venture now, I mean this time of year, especially in February, March, the scouting never stops and that's the beauty of deer hunting.

You may be actually hunting in the fall, the actual recurrence of your education in the woods should never end. Your deer season should really begin the minute that the deer season ends the previous year. And this time of year I love getting out in the woods, I love doing some shed hunting, I don't find a lot, we don't have a lot of deer in New Hampshire and when you do have a buck that's worthy and that you know is hanging around that it could be a shooter, the game's on to try to find those sheds. And when you're only talking about one to two bucks in the area probably within a few miles it's not too easy to find their sheds.

But what I've found is when you get out in the woods and you spend time on these ice down trails, by ice down I mean these are the trails that the deer have been hitting over and over and over and as the snow melts around them they become basically these little ice highways and you can see where they're more likely to go than others and you learn a lot even in a very, very small one-acre piece you'll figure out those deer like to hang out over there more around those fallen logs.

And I didn't know that until they left all this data on the ground. So the planning starts there, starts the minute deer season ends is when the next season begins and it's not pack it up, get inside, forget about it, it's still putting on your winter boots, hiking through the snow when it's low enough and hopefully you find a shed or two but it's really studying the deer tracks in the snow as the deer would move. It's a time to get out and actually add more knowledge to your overall hunt. You'll find places that you never knew existed that these deer love to go. Or maybe patterns change, you just didn't realize. It's a good indicator.

Yes. There's a lot of going out. We've got friends we go hunting with. We go out and just kind of figure it's not always about the hunt, but it's the camaraderie, the friendship, you know. Philip Garrett How to begin hunting again We were telling stories and we were comparing notes, going out, scouting out the areas where we're going to hunt and talking about it. Going out here and enjoying everyone's friendship and camaraderie. As a family, also we go hunt as a family with my three-year-old grandson. He was like two and a half when he started hunting. It's funny to watch him. You would never even think that a two and a half year old can be quiet out in the woods, but he was just as quiet as a church mouse. He goes out where he knows he's got to be quiet for when the deer come out.

 

Bruce: Let's stay on that right now, because a lot of our listeners, guys and gals, have kids that they want to take in the out-of-doors. How do you make it comfortable? How do you make it safe? And how do you make it fun for those kids?

 

Phil: Actually it was my daughter's idea to take her son hunting with her. She always tries to bring like little snacks along with them and little quiet toys. They hunt on the ground when they hunt or in a low-sitting stand to make sure it's safe for him and there's nothing to fall off of, you know, or hunt in a blind. And to keep him occupied, she will bring his little trucks and whatever. But he keeps a lookout also for the deer and whatever we're hunting for. He's got a pretty keen eye. Like I say, [inaudible 00:05:09]. He just knows and we taught him how to be aware of his surroundings and you see it. He gets his little toy guns, like in the back yard, and he practices his little walking through the bushes and hunting. It is fun to watch.

Like everybody, we all have challenges in life and you've got some in your life with your daughter. What recommendations or ideas would you share with some other men and women that are raising kids by themselves and they do have some challenges? What would you tell them about getting those kids into the out-of-doors? Tricia Kaiser - Busy moms hunt too

Tricia: Yeah. It's a great time to reconnect with your kids. I have three daughters. My oldest one will be 13 soon and she's been challenging, like I said. Then my middle daughter was born with Down's Syndrome, so that in itself is a huge daily challenge. Any kid is a challenge, but when you throw in a child with special needs, it's that much harder. And then my little one just turned six. So we use that time as our time to spend together. Tricia Kaiser - Busy moms hunt too

It's just really nice to have that one-on-one alone time with them that way

We don't get a lot of Mommy-daughter time obviously. When there's three of them it's hard to split your time up between them. But I use that time with my girls to just reconnect with them. We'll go out, and we'll sit, and we'll talk about things that bother them or stuff like that. It's just really nice to have that one-on-one alone time with them that way. It helps me unwind and de-stress from the day-to-day schoolwork and homework. Then I work a full-time job and dealing with the stress of having a child with a disability. Tricia Kaiser - Busy moms hunt too

Tricia: I do both, mostly out of the tree stand, but if I bring my girls out with me, because they like to go sit with me once in a while, I will sit on the ground blind because I don't like having them up in the tree yet. They're still kinda young, so we'll hunt out of a ground blind. But mostly in the tree.

When you think about lessons learned over the last couple of years, good ones and bad ones, can you share a couple of lessons learned with our audience?

Yeah. Bad lessons for me, don't get too confident.

Tricia: Yeah. Bad lessons for me, don't get too confident. Don't go out thinking that you're going to be, as my dad calls it, "The Great White Hunter," and kill everything that you see. And that you know you've got this and you're going to bring home this big trophy buck. Because I think letting your ego get in the was is a big thing for me.

I went out the first year -- we were surrounded by deer -- and I went out saying, "Yep, I'm going to kill everything I see!" And I missed three deer and that just really was like a wake-up call. Like, "Okay." So don't let your ego get in the way. Don't go out and take that experience for granted.

When it comes to good lessons, for me it's just practice. Trust yourself that you can do it. When I started with my bow, I started heavy again last year, shooting my bow, and it was the first time in about 15 years that I had shot. I was very unsure with it and I went out hunting. I thought, "This is never going to happen. I'm not going to do it." So just trust that you can do it. Especially as a woman! Don't let anybody tell you that you're not good enough, or you know, girls can't do this or girls can't do that. Just trust that you have the skill there. Practice all of the time.

If you miss, just take it as a loss. Go back and practice shooting, or re-sight your rifle, or whatever you need to do. Just suck it up and get right back into it. Don't let a missed shot, or a wounded animal that you didn't find, don't let that stop you. Don't let it kill the passion for you.

Get involved! Because you'll see the other side of the fence. You will see the disturbing numbers, quite frankly, of the reduction in folks that are pursuing life in the outdoors, chasing our passions.

Scott Smathers You'll see that there are folks making decisions, that quite frankly don't have a vested interest in the future. And like I said, my passions run from the time I was old enough. My next door neighbor, I said, he took me up bird hunting when I was ten, carried an old Harrington & Richardson single shot .410. He made me keep my shell in my pocket the first two times we walked the field.

Scott Smathers  Of course, I didn't know any better and the whole point was he was teaching me patience about when you're up on bird hunting, obviously is waiting for that point, that flush, and not to be nervous, and to practice my skill set of shooting. And I was hooked. But I had that opportunity of somebody to teach me. I had somebody to guide me. My dad was an avid angler and I have extremely fond memories of many, many hours on the water with him, education I gained from him not only about fishing, but also about life that, like most people, it didn't really hit me that he was that bright until I was 25 or 26. But the passions. You have to get involved!

The Sportsmen's Foundation, it was founded in 2002 here in Nebraska by a group of six outdoorsmen that were concerned at some of the legislation that was being proposed within our state senator's body and wanted to be able to provide a voice to those senators about who we are, what we are, and what we represent in the state, and what we do from a conservation standpoint.

Scott Smathers It has just grown from there. Now we as an organization sit at just under 13,000 members in our state and we have a very active voice. We work on positive legislation, defeating negative legislation, educating those who don't understand why we do what we do. And if you can get involved at any level and then make your voice heard and pay attention to the issues, we are going to be able to protect what we all love. We're going to be able to protect it for the next generations.
