Who killed William Swann in 1903?
News of the Times Episode 450 | 1903
Today, we take you to Wombwell, near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The year is 1903.
William Swann and his wife, Emily decide to take in a lodger—John Gallagher. But what starts as a financial arrangement soon turns into something far more dangerous.
The Swanns' marriage is already volatile, and tensions reach a breaking point when Emily and Gallagher's not-so-secret affair comes to light. William throws Gallagher out and bans him from ever returning. But Gallagher does return—when William is supposed to be away.
What happens next is brutal. William Swann is beaten to death. But by whose hand?
Did Gallagher, the lodger-turned-lover, strike the fatal blow? Did Emily wield the poker that ended her husband’s life? Or was it a crime committed together?
This twisted tale offers a very late revelation from the judge at the end of the trial which better answers the question of who killed William Swann.
Join us as we uncover the background, the crime, and the shocking verdict in this chilling tale.
And in today’s Further Particulars, we explore a bizarre lawsuit involving a dead body used in traveling shows—because sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
