“Several years ago, I was having dinner with a NFL head coach and I asked him, “Who do you think will win the Super Bowl this year?” We were sitting in his kitchen having a very late dinner. He didn’t even look up from his plate to answer, but I will never forget what he said. 

Coach: “Same team that won last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.” 

MK: “What do you mean? Three different teams have won the Super Bowl in the last three years.” 

Coach: “That’s where you’re wrong. That’s where most people get it wrong too.” 

MK: “What do you mean?” 

Coach: “The same team wins the Super Bowl every year.” 

MK: “What are you talking about? You sound like you’ve been drinking.”

Coach: “I haven’t been drinking, I mean every word I have said, and I am completely serious. The same team wins the Super Bowl every year: The team that has the discipline to master the basics. Football has a handful of basics. There are a thousand different plays, but they all rest on the offense and defense carrying out the basics of football with unerring consistency.” 

Success at almost anything rests upon this single principle: Do the basics, do them well, and do them every day, especially when you don’t feel like doing them.
