They go by many names; maintenance controller, pro super, production controller, operations/project planner, maintenance coordinator, production planner; but one title they all share is "cat herder".  Maintenance control is widely considered the operations and information hub of the aviation world.  This hub acts as the brain of an aviation organization which includes such functions as gathering and processing data, creating operations plans, and implementing solutions.  Controllers are often seen as the enemy of both the maintenance shops due to their perceived overbearing pursuit of fulfilling operations schedules.  Likewise they are seen as the bane of management for their lack of willful, blind obedience to "big picture" plans, or the non-tyrannical push to fulfill priorities. The fast paced, anxiety inducing environment that is maintenance control requires a sharp mind and a great amount of communication to turn abstract into reality, especially in the event of an emergency.  Flight operations success hinges on the ability of maintenance control.  On a good day it is organized chaos, on rough and stressful days, it is virtually like herding cats.
